what a hassle - my account was hacked and charged over 100.00 in charges , which hit my paypal account. Microsoft is investigating and cancelled my account for now. Has anyone experienced this before?

I have not personally but a lot of my friends have had this happen. Takes a while but you will get your money back.
Also, I just read today that there is some connection between recent hacks and people playing FIFA 12 on Xbox Live. Maybe the weak link is EA??

It's not to do from you playing FIFA12. It's basically a way to monetise the hack, by buying Ultimate Team packs in the game, selling the star players to earn coins, and then selling the coins on eBay. So the hackers are using FIFA12 instead. One of the first things you spot in your history to alert you to an issue. Given the new dash update, it also tells you if you last logged in from another console, which is another red flag if you only use one console.
One theory though is that the people being affected have played an EA game in the past and/or logged details on EA's website, and yes, EA's website was exploited in the last couple of months apparently. Whether that is a true link, I don't know.

Personally no I've never had this happen to me. However, when I was working for this "help desk mercenary" type gig a few years ago people were getting phised left and right for their Live accounts. At the time Microsoft refused to speak to anyone on the phone if that person's name wasn't on the account.
So if your 14 year old son's name was on the account and you were the one paying the bill for him Microsoft wanted to talk to your son, not you. Never you. The reason being that people were using this vector for their attack and with some basic information furnished by the owner they tricked Microsoft reps into handing over the entire account.
My boss got pissed when I told him we couldn't take an account recovery gig from some client's kid. I'd be very glad they didn't lock you out as well.

I almost wonder if it is worth it to wait or just buy a new account and start over with a new Xbox live account. I had 4 days off and wanted to play sky rim and mw3 , now I basically can't do anything for a month or so until Microsoft straightens this out.
As for EA, I have no ea games right now. So I don't think this would be an ea leak.

I do not use credit cards to purchase anything on PSN or LIVE. The prepaid cards are the best way to go.

Well the cool thing about PSN is once you add funds to your wallet you can delete your credit card information, 360 doesn't offer that, once your CC info is on Microsoft's system it's there to stay, I even called their customer support and they said they could not remove that info which is BS.
So i'll use my credit card on PSN, but definitely not 360.

You've been able to remove your credit card information associated with your Xbox Live account for several years now. Go to XboxLive.com and log in.
