Always dodge at a perpendicular to the incoming fire.

For the 2600 version, Shoot robots on the diagonalls.. they can't shoot back. Also, run upwards and exit on the top.. Evil Otto for some reason is slow going upwards, so you can alway outrun him that way
For the Arcade version.. it's simple reflexes. Most basic strategies utilize the fact that the robots can kill each other (by shooting or running into each other or the walls) and have the tendency to mimic your movements. So with a little practice, it's often an easy matter to get a good percentage of the robots to kill themselves or others within the first few seconds of a board. Like for a simple example.. below you'd get Robot1 and Robot2 to run into each other just by wiggling left and right for a bit.
-----> You <---- (wiggle left and right)
=====wall==========
R1 ---> <-----R2
Aside from that.. it's pretty much reflex. Watch what side of your body shots come out of when shooting up or down and adjust accordingly when in a direct shootout. Later on, you can shoot, dodge a shot (the robot will follow) then move back into position to lead the robot back into your shot. Also, watch out for the diagonall shots.. run from them in a perpendicular direction.
When the Robots get to a point where they shoot 2 super fast shots at once (and beyond).. you're on your own :P

NE146 gave some great tips for the arcade version, and those are pretty much the same basic strategies for the 5200 version as well. One other thing I'd like to add is you can get Evil Otto to kill off some robots as well, since he will bounce around on the same plane as your player is. Sometimes I find this is the only way to kill off robots that are trapped in a box, and its important to kill all the robots all the time if possible since you get a nice bonus for doing so.

JRTo be honest, I'm getting back to work on it after CGE. The *two* projects I've got appearing at CGE took a great deal of spare time to complete. One of them is down, one more to finish by Saturday! And, no, no hints until Vegas. ;)

Dodge and shoot... that's what I can say... recently got 25k on MAME for it so it's all about the weaving and fancy footwork...

Make sure to shoot ALL the robots on each level or you won't get the bonus points.

Basic tips to remember (you probably know these):
1: Evil Otto appears in the same place where you first appear in every room, so move away quickly.
2: Don't try to double back as soon as you enter a room; that doorway is sealed.
3: Bullets can pass through your neck (or lack thereof); maybe this can be used to your advantage somehow.
4: The game ends only after you find Rhonda, Quickclaw, and the Raj Diamond.
Have fun!

Any tips for avoiding robots when you spawn in a level, and there are two that have a clear shot at you? I always get those cheap shots when I'm on a roll....

So recently I've been discovering some classic games, that everyone here already knew about. It may be a little embarrassing, but whatever.
So I fired up MAME today after the Holiday weekend and decided to check out the arcade version. I had been playing the 2600 cart recently, but after watching a youtube video and hearing the voices I decided I needed to try the arcade version.
Anyway I played it for an hour this morning, and I was barely able to crack 1600. The arcade version is more challenging than the 2600, and it took me 3 or 4 games to figure out that you need to be pressing a direction when you fire. A great thing to keep in mind, if you're used to the 2600 version.
After reading a few tips here, I think I'll be able to improve. Thanks 2003 era DP you've been a big help. Also I think it's cool that MAME saves high scores. Growing up in the 80's on the NES, I was always disappointed that the games never saved your high scores.
ALSO: Fellow DP'ers, at the sake of feeling inadequate, what's your high score (and on what version)?
2600: 4300 (game 3)
MAME: 1960 (default settings)

I can score around 10,000 on a good day. But it's one of those games I have to "reset" many times to get going. Usually if I die before 5,000 I start over.

I'll post my scores for both the fast and slow bullet versions in a moment. They are both around 25k. I have about 30k on the 5200 version also. It's my favorite arcade game of all time.

My dirty secret about Berzerk.
I have never played the arcade version.
I just fired up MAME, and played it for the first time. Man, it's a lot harder than the 2600 version I grew up on. My very first game ended at 1830.
You're giving me an idea for a Monday Morning MAME Club contest.
And don't forget folks, the Monday Morning MAME Club can be found in the Arcade Alley forum, the current game will always be stickied at the top of the forum, and you can do a forum search (yes, it actually works) for past MMMC games. Feel free to fire up MAME and play along [/shameless plug]. And please, talk about the games. Love em or hate em. [/ok the real end of the shameless plug]

Here's a few really bad moves later:

I'm on a different computer so I'm starting with a clean score sheet.

TDI works too.
Since the GF got home, I've moved my game from the MAME equipped TV downstairs, upstairs to the 2600. There's about 8 different gameplay modes (with 3 and 6) resembling the arcade the closest. I'm going to try for 5000 tonight, although my poor skills are getting the best of me.
I'll try the arcade again in the morning when I have some free time. It's a pretty good port, but the arcade is really the harder of the 2. I wonder if the 2600 voice hack cart, is more like the arcade or the standard Atari version.
Also: Great score Mingy, but I'm still a ways off from that.

Does the Arcade version say "Got the Humanoid-got the Chicken" too, or is that just the 5200 version? I can get Berzerk arcade ROM v. 2 to say "Get the Chicken", and I thought the arcade did in fact say the first quote....:?

It says "Chicken, Fight Like a Robot!" At least the ROM I DL'ed yesterday does. I believe it also says "Got the Human," when they kill you.

They say "Got the Humanoid" and "Chicken, Fight like a Robot."
I used to listen to that song "Goin' Berzerk" by Buckner and Garcia a lot, and then I tried out the game on MAME, it was pretty fun.
Although it kind of worries me that it actually killed two people, one of which had a time bomb for a heart in theory and the stress killed him after getting into the Top Ten twice in 15 minutes, the other had a heart attack and a score of 16,660 when he died.
Yeah, that's probably why I don't play it anymore. Fun game though, I will say that. I actually just forgot about playing the game itself after a while really, I still listen to the song though, great song.

Okay, clearup time:
All arcade ROM versions of Berzerk say the "Chicken, Fight like a Robot!" phrase, but I've only been able to get version 2 to do variations on using "Chicken". But the well-known "Got The Humanoid, got the chicken!" phrase is not one of them. The 5200 loves to say it, once the 'chicken' qualifier come into play.

Just got done playing my best round on the 2600 yet. I decided to use game setting "6," which gives you an extra life every 2000 points- like the arcade version. Scored 6480!
So heading over to Twin Galaxies, I found out that I'm really wasting my time.
Variation: NTSC - Game 6, Difficulty A or B
Platform: Atari 2600 / VCS
1 100.00 % 787,040 Todd Rogers 05/09/2001
2 38.31 % 301,510 Robert T Mruczek 05/23/2001
3 13.44 % 105,740 Stephen Knox 06/02/2001
787k? Holy Fuck...
A MASSIVE MONDAY UPDATE: After playing about 2 dozen games today, I've improved my score by 400 points, to 6840. I figure that in approximately 100 years I'll have hit the 10k mark.
Just hit 7080!

No.
Dying while playing a game and a game killing a person is not the same thing. Berzerk didn't kill anyone.
