New submitter lrsach01 writes "Wizards of the Coast has announced a 'new iteration' of their Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Early information says the game will be more inclusive, with a basic rule set that 'builds out.' This Spring, WotC will be 'conducting ongoing open playtests with the gaming community to gather feedback on the new iteration of the game as we develop it.'"http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=5th+Edition+of+Dungeons+%26amp%3B+Drag ons+Announced%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FwkHFND)http ://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F01%2F09%2F1921245%2F5th-edition-of-dungeons-dragons-announced%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Df acebook)http://www.digitpress.com//a.fsdn.com/sd/googleplus_icon_large.png (https://plusone.google.com/_/+1/confirm?hl=en&url=http://slashdot.org)

Uhm, so is 5th edition gonna be a video game or something? I'm not sure why D&D is relevant to this board.

This. And my friends are all anal about how "3.5 is the ONLY edition worth playing," so I probably STILL wouldn't have anyone to play with.

Even though that was posted by the bot in Modern Gaming, I'm switching this to Off-Topic, where it belongs.

Personally, I quit buying new D&D books in 2nd ed, when Skills and Powers and Combat and Tactics showed a taste of what was to come. Wizards with swords and armor? In Middle Earth, maybe. Not in Gygax-ville.

I wasn't thrilled with the class imbalance of 3rd and 3.5, and I hated hated hated HATED 4th. It's a great system for rolling dice, and it's incredibly streamlined...but, that's part of the problem. I also hated what WotC did with the lore of the D&D multiverse. We already HAD large-scale deicide a few years before; we didn't need another one that reduced the archetypal (i.e., Forgotten Realms) pantheon to fewer than two-dozen gods. Of course, that setting is so overloaded with Mary Sue characters I'm surprised no one with an Italian name has achieved godhood yet.

And goddammit, neither Asmodeus nor Orcus are ****ing gods, and you'd never see demons and devils exist under the same umbrella. 4th Edition was shameful on most levels, but they DID actually balance out the classes very well.

And I will happily be playing 3.5e when 5e comes out, too.

Going to be trying 3.5 next month for the first time. A little trepiditious about Hasbro+Gygax, but I watched the new Battlestar and Dr Who...
Hope it's a Dr Who and not a Battlestar.

Is it wrong to laugh?

I mean I guess I'm a nerd also, but reading these posts I was almost in tears wondering if everyone in this thread routinely got beat up in high school.

So I laughed anyway's.

Nope. In actuality, I was the violent, unstable one in my high school. I got into a lot of fights.

4th edition could of been worse..my biggest qualm was how it almost took an MMO styling with its set roles...defender, controller, etc.... I've played plenty of campaigns with 5 wizards blowing through everything :P

I still have my 1st and 2nd edition books as I mostly still play those editions
