That would suck to have one of the 2nd or 3ed disc data error games back in the day.
“Sweet, finally made it to disc 3 of FF7… WTF is dis shit!”

Also, I seem to remember having a misprinted Xenogears manual where IIRC somewhere in the middle it repeated the first few pages (the character and Gear info was in there twice.) Maybe the first run had two languages in it? The greatest hits ver. I have now doesn’t repeat like the black ver. I had.

Does anyone really care all that much about errors of this type though or collect them? It can happen with any mass produced consumer item and often does. I know there are tons of CDs that have the wrong audio on them and DVDs with the wrong movies. While it's a bit of a novelty, ultimately you're gonna have to buy another copy to get the right content and it's not like replication facilities are similar to the US Mint with excessive quality control which is why error coins are so unusual and sought after compared to something like this.

Isn’t most of this stuff (namely the printing errors) considered variants? If so then yea, I’d say some people care.

I bought the PS1 game Tall Infinity years ago and the back insert was printed in error (either upside down or backwards). I don't know if it was every single copy because I could swear I managed to find a fixed insert (I'd check but the game is buried in a box in the basement).

When I got Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, there was an America Online trial disc inside. I'm not sure why.

Not sure if you're kidding or not, but that probably wasn't an error, that was probably somebody committing return fraud. Thieves used to buy games from Target and other retailers, take them home and carefully open the side of the wrap, slip out the disc and replace it with an AOL disc and then reseal it. I had a friend who worked at Target in the 90s/early 2000s and he said they actually sent out multiple corporate memos about it as it was a very common theft technique.

If you're talking about the printing errors that were widespread perhaps, but how exactly would someone go about collecting the wrong label or game on a particular disc? It just seems ridiculous and a waste of time and money.

spoken from a gamer not a collector point of view. just like stamps coins and other things. errors can be worth more to the right person
some people collect sealed games never to play. to me thats a waste of money but i personally have a soft spot for the weird and unusual

Not at all, I consider myself a collector first and a gamer second. Having said that, I respect that people may collect things for different reasons and I can understand the whole variant collecting thing even though I don't collect them myself for the most part. I guess what I find odd is trying to track the limited number of reports of misprinted discs when an average replication facility can have an error rate of several percent and still be considered acceptable by industry standards. Unlike coins and stamps which are manufactured under strict quality controls, most replication facilities are designed to pump out a ton of product in the shortest time possible for as little money as possible. As such, mistakes can and do happen regularly. I guess I just don't see much of a resale market for misprinted discs which I guess is actually good for you as it will make putting together your collection all that much cheaper.

yeah it does actually attest to the rarity of the items in question
but one thing is not known is how rare they really are while most typos and such probily do not get returned
but the ones with the different games maybe rarer and are harder to get a hold of because they were returned to the store and got destroyed
with any collectable theres levels of rarity. i was sad when i found more accounts of tony hawk 2 which i got from someone through a forum
then found one on ebay complete sold the incomplete one for half of what i spent on the complete one . in my small collection of this particular error type not counting the mass produced (Strider and jet moto 2). i think i own 3 rare ones two of which are one of a kinds. even for wrong games on the disc theres more common ones i have accounts of people returning them time and time again NHL 2k6.i know of 4 tony hawks . more them them seems to make them collectable Final Fantasy 7 with the floating i always seems to garner more of a price. (even though the game is dirt common and even the error is common)

Australian copies of Top Gear Overdrive (N64).

All state "Designed for N64 Expansion Pak" underneath the Rumble Pak icon. Early releases are also missing the OFLC rating, but this was remedied by putting a sticker on the front of later produced releases.

This copy on eBay is an example, like the copy I own (which I bought in Dec 1998 when the game first released here). Expansion Pak typo + no rating (which technically made it illegal for sale!): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Top-Gear-Overdrive-Nintendo-64-Boxed-/220942895405?pt=AU_PC_Video_Games_Games&hash=item337139092d

There is a Black Label Final Fantasy VII with the disc 3 meteor underprint in disc 2 instead of the normal Highwind underprint. There was a discussion a few weeks back.
Evil Zone SLOS-00855 is printed on the spine instead of SLUS-00855, seems to be all copies.
Capcom just committed a war crime with the Resident Evil "Revelaitons" error.
There is also a greatest hits Castlevania game for the PS1 with a wrong data on CD error. I'll try to remember to ask the owner about it next week.

Super Street Fighter II for SNES was the one to have the Japanese version on the rom in certain copies of the game in the US. From the DP rarity guide:

Don't be too surprised if your US release is in Japanese. Some carts drifted north from a Mexican system package that included this cart. There is also speculation that the Japanese version was made available (on an SNES cart) as a pre-release rental in the US.

Has anybody else noticed that?

I'm not sure how I'd classify the error, but my cartridge of Super Mario All-Stars has a feature in Super Mario Bros 3 where if you hit the select button, it'll cycle through all of the various powerups and suits available in the game. I've never encountered anyone else who had that happen to them... gotta say it makes beating the game much easier.

I do recall reading another thread on another forum where it was estimated to be a bug with all copies.
They programmers probably removed the code that specifically enabled it, but didn't disable it, so it's set by whatever the flag in RAM gets set to randomly on console power-up. (so in otherwords, it's controlled by uninitialized RAM)
Possibly differences due to the console and environment around the console would lead to a bias whether the RAM favors setting the bits to 0s or 1s.

Error Spotlight is a little showcasing i do of particular errors with certain games.

Error Spotlight: Mortal Kombat 4

whats to say about Mortal Kombat 4. is it a good game i personally liked it,not the best looking though.then again I'm an MK fan. why would this game be featured in an error spotlight? Simple really its a silver back game not by choice. unlike the recent re-releases of some of the Squeenix RPG's. there is only one copy of this game misprint known which Phins owned and sold to Dangerboy. what most likely happened with this particular game is it was either pressed on the wrong type of plastic blank or there was no pigment to color it blue/black.

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2493/mk4240.jpg

some things to look out for from the front of the disc is the middle ring is clear lacking any of the dark blue pigment in the plastic and its also noticeable near the outer edge of the disc.

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/3235/mk440.jpg

the back is plain to see though. some people may be thinking pirate also known as a HK silver. from the picture of the disc i can see the small bar code present on the disc. what is not visible is the PSRM and other numbers which are on every ps1 disc. which is most likely a lighting issue and not that they are not there. i've seen some of the re-released Squeenix games on ebay as an error which is not the case with those games (Chrono Cross,Final Fantasy 9,Final Fantasy Anthology,Final Fantasy Chronicles,Final Fantasy Origins.)

Final Fantasy Chronicles (FF IV and Chrono Trigger compilation game) - This is an impossible to find error version. We were recently informed that there are only two copies known to exist. This game is virtually impossible to find. The error is that Sony printed it from the factory using silver backed discs instead of the PS1 standard of black label discs. This game is for play on the Playstation 1 (PS1) and Playstation 2 (PS2) video game system console. Most Playstation 3 (PS3) consoles are backwards compatible and can also play these games. A lot (maybe the majority?) of copies of Harvest Moon 64 shipped with spelling errors in the manual and the game itself. Natsume had misspelled their own company name on the title screen.

Actually, this isn't uncommon. There are a number of Harvest Moon games with spelling and grammatical errors, although Harvest Moon 64 is the biggest offender.

Astal for the SEGA Saturn doesn't have the name on the side of the case. It's the only Saturn game I know of that doesn't have the name on the side.

There are a few of SEGA Saturn games that have the Saturn logo rotated 180 degrees on the side of the case. You can tell because the shine on the blue sphere in the logo is on the wrong side. Battle Arena Toshinden URA Ultimate Revenge Attack and Rayman are two that I know of.

The 32X logo on Doom is upside down. All of the other 32X games (that I know of) have the 32X logo facing up. It's facing down on Doom.

The manual for Zillion on the SEGA Master System tells you to input the Suicide code in wrong room, which sucks, because you die if you do.

There are copies of Pyscho Fox for the SEGA Master System misspelled Psyco Fox.

There are copies of Monopoly for the SEGA Master System mistyped Mono Poly.

I don't see any Atari games up here.

Two common errors are 2600 Pole Position with Pole Positn on the end label.
Raiders of the Lost Ark 2600 with Raiders Lost ark on the end label.

Both are fairly common as far as errors go and you should be able to find both of these pretty quicky.

I don't know if hardware packaging errors are worth mentioning(or even if this technically counts as game hardware), but the Smashing Pumpkins guitar hero faceplate says "Smashing Pumkins" on the side of the box. It's like this on every one I've ever seen.

Been a while, Hello Kitty's Cube Frenzy of PS1 has a printing error, on the disc the ESRB is "Early Childhood" instead of Everyone, All copies seem to be effected.

I have a Need for speed Hot pursuit 2 for ps2 where the game data was printed on both sides of the disk somehow. I can post pics if you want to add to list. I worked at a game store for 7 years and it was the weirdest thing ever. Both sides on the dvd play the game in an NTSC PS2.

I just discovered another one: Reboot for the PS1, actually 2 different cutting errors, Some copies have the back art cut very low. Others have the manual cut high.
I only caught this one because I just bought 2 of them. For the back art it is most noticeable below the the SLUS number on the sides, the ESRB box on the back, the low cut version as a 1 millimeter gap to the edge, the normal one has about 3mm. The high cut manual is most noticeable on the back above the large G, the high cut version has Diablo's horn touching the top edge, the normal one has a 1mm gap.

Panzer Dragoon Saga NTSC has a typo on the back "The new "rail free" 3D engine lets LET you soar deeper..." I find it funny how a game this LEGENDARY missed the list. It must be common or on every copy because it's on my personal one and the scanned one over on the cover project as well. http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=12165

There was a limited recall for the Xbox360 LEGO The Lord Of The Rings game because the game disc was incorrectly labeled as a Not For Resale Demo Disc. I bought one on Ebay and the disc is the full version of the game, just mislabeled. There's some blurbs about it at Wikipedia....

Hey, old thread I know but I do believe I have the Pandemonium misprint?

It's boots completely the wrong game, 2xtreme.
I don't remember where I got it from nor do I have the original case.

The disc is unassuming, no special marks or indications of any kind.

Should I post pix?

yes post pics there should be a PSRM number printed near the center of the disc (its still visible on my correct copy of pandemonium ) i collect this type of error and have a few.

for instance my tony hawk 2 misprint has a psrm of 020280 (near center ring)
while the correct psrm is 017301 (that one is printed on the disc near the edge )
