i ordered a backwards compatible japanese ps3 to play some of my japanese ps2 and ps1 games. since japanese ps3 games can be played on a u.s. ps3 system, i really didnt buy it to play japanese ps3 games.

however, i'm interested in playing battlefield 3 for ps3. my question is, could i buy the japanese version of game and play online with u.s. players? and if i had the japanese version with the dlc (back to karkand), could i download that and activate my online pass from the u.s. servers?

or should i buy the u.s. version of the game instead?

it's all kind of confusing.

you should be ok either way, battlefield has dedicated servers so you can choose where and with who you want to play with, so its a non issue

Buying the Japanese console is fine, but buy the US version of the game since there's an online pass. This is only assumption, but the reason for this is that in order to play in the US servers, your account will probably need to be a US account. If you use the Japanese online pass, it might not accept it on a different region PSN. Not sure if this is correct, but PSN store cards from one region can't be used on another, so maybe this is the same or similar.
