Vertical Shmup, after each level you purchase a new weapon which is your super weapon for the next level. there's 15, possibly 20 weapons to purchase, and once you use one, you can't use it again for the rest of the game. I can't remember the title for the life of me, I'm hoping a shmup vet will remember this one. I'd love to get my hands on it again

For that matter, I was just thinking about this SNES Shmup I played back in the day that had real licenced rock tunes in it -- no words, but each stage had a song from the bank. Listed in the book, also. Wish I could recall what game that was.....
Hmm. The US version of BioMetal had bad techno tunes from a group called 2Unlimited or something, IIRC.

I'm pretty sure that the game you're thinking of is Strike Gunner S.T.G.
The SNES game is, in fact, a port of an arcade game of the same name. I remember the SNES version having some added Mode7 in places, but I haven't played the game in 9 years, so I wouldn't be able to say for sure.

mhhh? BioMetal had 2 Unlimited music? gotta test this :) 2 Unlimited is (they recently released a remix of an old songs after years of NOTHING) a dutch Euro-Dance Act (not techno) from the Netherlands....
I believe that the story goes something like this:
BioMetal was developed by Athena for the Japanese market in early 1993. Activision picked up the rights to the game for the US market shortly thereafter and replaced all of the music in the game (which was originally your standard game rock stuff) with licensed music from 2Unlimited, Byte Records, and Radikal Records, who apparently were big names in the techno scene at the time (and I'm ignorant, so if anyone could clarify as to whether or not Byte/Radikal Records are still popular, I'd appreciate it). The Japanese release of BioMetal featured 16 tracks, whilst the US version with licensed music features a paltry 6 tracks. Activision also changed the names of the heroes from David Onizuka and Cynthia Matthews to the names of, I believe, 2 members of 2Unlimited, namely Kid Ray and Miss Anita.
Simply bewildering...
