I just bought the North American version. I heard the Japanese and PAL versions have Guncon support but the USA version doesn't, but can I fix that?

If not, would it be possible to just play the PAL version on a modded console and still use the Guncon?

I got another question: Do people honestly just not know the answer, or is Resident Evil some sort of taboo subject here?

It seems like Resident Evil topics always quickly die, often without the actual question being answered.

I haven't heard of any fixes for the US version but you might as well just get the Japanese version and use an import convertor(it will set you back $5-$15). It's a pretty straight forward game so you shouldn't have any issues navigating thru it. And you can use a simple katakana guide to understand the menu screens very easily.

Is there any reason a PAL game wouldn't work with a North American Guncon?

I'll probably end up doing what you suggested since I don't know if my modded PS1 even can do PAL, but it would be nice if it did.

Your Guncon will work with PAL games, and if your Playstation is modded (or you do the swap trick) it will play PAL games.

The problem is that the console will output a PAL signal, so unless your TV supports PAL you'll have to use some type of conversion to get a NTSC signal out of it. You could either make an ISO of the CD and patch it to NTSC, or use a boot disk that will support the choice PAL/NTSC output (like Import Player). If you follow either of these routes you'll still lose a portion of the screen due to the resolution change. I don't think I've got a copy of the PAL version (I know I do both the J/US versions) but unless the game itself has an option to adjust the screen position the amount of display you lose could either be a very small portion or a larger one (maybe 1/8th of the screen).
