There's barely any talk about Minecraft here.
Who here plays and what are your thoughts on it?

From videos it just looks like you create stuff and that's it. Is there anymore to the game?

Fun is what you make of it, minecraft especially so.

Sadly, this game makes me feel ill.
No, really. For some reason the game makes me feel ill. It gives me godawful motion sickness... as bad if not worse than Half-Life 2.
I'm more of a Terraria guy, myself.

I'm with you in the sense that I don't understand the objective. I originally took it to be a "world building" game, but heard you have to build to defend against some sort of army or foe.
I'm not a big PC guy, but would like to try it when it comes to Kinect.

Don't you mean walk right and jump(or swim and fly?) Technically you can walk either direction, but the usual direction to the end of the stage is to the right.

Nope, my statement is no more incorrect then yours.
There are many things to do in minecraft, building a shelter to protect yourself from the baddies is just the first step. At some point you'll raise chickens to provide feathers to create arrows to kill a dragon. Or mine the depths of hell itself to get ingredients to make a health potion. Or build a 1,200 ft waterslide into the front of your house. Or raise a pack of wolves and keep them as both pets and guardians. Or just stand there looking out a window watching the sunrise over the horizon.
The fun part of the game isn't what *you* build, it's seeing what other people have built around you and adding to that. Once you dig a pile of raw iron ore out of the ground, smelt it in a furnace to make ingots, use the ingots to make plate armor and a sword, then set out across the countryside with a few of your buddies, that's when you'll see what minecraft is about.

I think what I like most about these type of games is that they seem to speak to some sort of lost childhood curiosity, back when you had no understanding of what a program was, or that cart/disk space was finite, or that there were limits, and wondered what hidden worlds might lie behind or beyond what little slice of it you were seeing on the screen.

PM sent.
I enjoy minecraft for simply being creative and building things but with obstacles that present themselves in the game like the various mobs or just terrain or logistical challenges. Its a game that doesn't really have a stated goal and if you cant wrap your brain around that or you just find that unfun then its not the game for you. Otherwise you can literally lose yourself in it and the joke "just one more block" really is how I at least get sucked into minecraft for extended periods of time.

Minecraft is something I've been meaning to try, but just haven't bothered yet. I've watched a few streams by the Backloggery guys and it seems like something I could get into, but $26 just for me to test the thing goes against my sensibilities. Maybe if the program goes on sale sometime I'll jump.

Prog you run a minecraft server for friends too? Fun!
In any case for me and my friends our fun is trying to take basic items and build something we otherwise couldn't do in real life. Such as stadiums where people fight to the death. Since we don't die for good, it's all good fun with friends!
In honesty like it's been said it's the user that will make the game fun. most of us like sandbox games where you can build dismantle and restart what you are doing. Definitely for those who love to plan and design.
Some things from the past we built before changing server files: We've cleaned up since.

Its the same for me. Back when I was a kid, I loved lego and I mean loved. Thats all I did was build and build for hours apon hours. Minecraft to me is just a giant Lego sandbox without the Lego product name stamped all over it.

I used to play it a lot but I eventually became bored with the game. I paid $18-19 for the game and imo, that's what it is worth. $27 is a bit high for something that is still largely incomplete and buggy.

Minecraft is awesome, the open ended nature of it is truly mesmerizing and I find it effortless to put hours into this game. The current $20+ price tag may seem a bit steep for a game that's buggy, poorly optimized and incomplete but that's all you'll ever have to spend on it. Performance and content is continuously being updated and you'll have free access to all advances for the life of the project.

Until the genuine XBLA Minecraft release, you might be interested in checking out one of the handful of Minecraft clones on Xbox Live Indie Games, should the idea of a console version of the game float your boat. The best of those, IMHO, is Total Miner: Forge as it feels the most like the game its directly derived from.

I've been curious about this game but I originally didn't have the specs on my laptop and my wife took over my old PC which could do fine with its now upgraded 2GB video card (it's a quad core pc.) I originally had this weak netbook but upgraded a bit to a X53E ASUS Laptop which has a intel i5-2410M chip clocks as high as 3ghz per core(4) and it has the intel hd 3000 graphics and can use up to 1.7GB (of 6 GB on the system) for video. Prior intel chips were crap, this one rates in around the radeon 5450 line of dx10 video cards from like 2 years back. This thing has run Civ5 smoothly on medium settings and same with Guild Wars 2.
Any clue how this may handle minecraft?

Oh really low resources eh? I read earlier in the development it was fairly hungry to render the world unless you stuck to lower detail small areas which wasn't very appealing to me. I may have to give it a shot. Thanks. I had been doing Terraria but I'm sworn off using front end junk friendly or not which includes Steam so that's out.

the only thing that would eat it up is if large amounts of players or mobs (AI characters) show up. Or some douche decides to blow up like 100 tnt at once (which supposedly theres a video of guy who blew up like a 1000 or so and it made his up to date super gaming pc go blue screen of death).
The game works old fashion style where the more pixels its gotta render specially animated the more its gonna push your computer
oh and after a long chat with head mod of the mau5ville server yesterday i got unbanned.

Um...not even close. Minecraft is one of the biggest resource hogs out there. It takes a respectable rig to get it running decently. I have 10 Gb of RAM dedicated to it when I play. There sheer amount of objects this game has to render at one time is enormous.
My advice is to download the Optifine mod, only use the 64-bit version of Java, and dedicate > 4 Gb off memory (right in thecommand line). My PC is an absolute monster and Minecraft ran like shit until I did all of these things.

I am running 6 gb at high settings and i run it fine6 gb is plenty, I was just responding to the statement that Minecraft is a low resource game. The PC version needs a lot of horsepower. There's a reason this isn't out for PS3, and the portable and 360 versions only have tiny little worlds.

I play far more Minecraft than is good for me, though I love the technical side of it most of all, designing small, functional things that have a practical in-game use.
I've also done a let's play series of it that precisely one person watches- www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoN7RI9HmsLqVcVKIZFEYcO48vvUGz5f2

I finished my arena
24 hours of work (i am serious too)
roughly 200 thousand bricks to make it.
Has 4 bathrooms
a consession stand
ticket booth
5 ticket lines/security checks
9 entrances into the concert arena part of the building
general admission floor as well as stadium style seating
glass front
merch stand
I think i might add a full on restraunt on a second floor in the main lobby
Phew
