donniebaseball23 writes "As a follow-up to his piece on Xbox 720, veteran games journalist Chris Morris has put together some thoughtful advice on what Sony needs to do (and needs to avoid) to ensure that the next generation PlayStation is a success. In particular, Morris notes that Sony must 'look beyond games' to create a fully fledged entertainment hub: 'Nintendo has been pretty adamant that it has little interest in content beyond games. Microsoft seems to be rushing to embrace the set top box world. Sony, though, seems a bit confused about what it wants.'" http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=PS4%3A+What+Sony+Should+and+Shouldn't+ Do%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FyFzzMW) http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F01%2F17%2F2348223%2Fps4-what-sony-should-and-shouldnt-do%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium%3Dfacebook ) http://www.digitpress.com//a.fsdn.com/sd/googleplus_icon_large.png (https://plusone.google.com/_/+1/confirm?hl=en&url=http://slashdot.org)

What they shouldn't do is launch it at $600.

I dont know sony seems to be in the habbit to release each console at a higher price.... maybe a more realistic goal is to shot for lanching it not over 600...

And if they're going to charge a premium, perhaps they should make sure the unit isn't a pile of shit so people are only having to shell out that kind of money once.

Sounds like a PC to me.
Another thing that I'd recommend that they not do is strip away it's features layer at a time like they did with the PS3. People tend to get annoyed when you advertise your product as the greatest thing since sliced bread because of features that you then remove a year later.

Seriously. There was nothing more that kept me away as long as it sticking at that price point for as long as it did.
Which is funny because I still ended up buying a used 60gig for that price anyways when priced had stopped peaking at 1000 a system when PS2 backwards compatibility was being cut. lol

No. No hubs no toasters and mechanical hands that jerk my dick or anything extra. I want a machine that plays games and games only.
I have a Roku a TV and a PC and a DVD player for everything else. Stop turning game machines into finicky easy to break pieces of shit that are over powered and overheat. IMO Nintendo get's that.
People buy consoles first and foremost to play games on.

I completely agree! They need to manufacture and market the next Playstation as a gaming machine first and foremost. This was a huge fuck up, along with many others they made with the PS3 launch. Marketing it as a machine that can do everything in addition to gaming just confuses people.

I guess it depends on what they mean by entertainment hub. I've never used my gaming console as a DVD player but it doesn't seem to be an inconvenience that it also provides this ability. I don't think that you'll ever see another home console without network support as developers have gotten used to being able to release buggy games that they can (maybe) patch later. Plus the stores make them too much money.
Just curious, what 'entertainment hub' featured are everyone so opposed to and why?

Sony needs to market the next Playstation console as a gaming console and nothing more. They shouldn't even use the phrases "digital hub" or "entertainment hub". It's fine if they briefly mention that it plays your movies and music, but they have to focus on what kind of gaming experience you're going to get out of it first and foremost. They really don't even need to mention that it plays movies, music, and goes online, pretty much every console is expected to do those things any way these days.

To be fair that's just marketing. Otherwise the PS4 advertising campaign would basically be;
PS4 - Basically the same console and games that you've been playing for the past 20 years but now with better graphics and a $100 higher price tag.

It's just a simple fact the more you put into a machine the more there is for parts/software to break down. They should focus on one thing and doing it well. These current hubs have a much higher fail rate than previous gens.
I still have systems over 20 years old still working as they did one thing.
