My SNES died on me a year or so ago. It powers on but the screen is black. I figured the video chip died. I have about 40 games and they all do the same thing except for two of them. Space Megaforce has audio but no picture. And Super Punch-Out!! actually works fine.
Any ideas why this is the case? I'm not expecting to fix the machine but this confuses me.

OK, I'll be the first to ask the obvious questions. Have you thoroughly cleaned the cart connector and carts? What model are you using?

I have cleaned them (with the card/cloth method, not an official cleaning kit). It's model SNS-001.

Internal chips do go bad in SNES systems. A friend's SNES has a problem where no matter whose copy of FFIII gets put in the system, the graphics mess up when they get in the airship. When they land, water is where land should be and land is where water should be. But they can walk on the water where land should be.

My suggestion, just buy another SNES. They aren't expensive or rare. It would just be easier. This is exactly why I own spares of all my systems.

My SNES won't display anything with Mode 7. Super Mario Kart only shows mario and the gang, but the tracks are nothing but black screen.

Didn't Terranigma use mode 7 in the overworld?
Would hate to lose that.

Look at the plus side, you can still imagine you are fighting Mike Tyson.
