It looks like Nintendo is second guessing their decision...and I couldn't be more happy..I just hope they go through with it. Looks like they want to alleviate any confusion there might be of it just being a new version of the WII.
Couldn't care less about a name change, but it would be nice if Nintendo allowed for Wii titles to be upscaled to 1080P.
While there's familiarity with Wii as a brand, it might be in Nintendo's best interest to distance itself as far as possible from Wii. Wii was a fad for a majority of those who purchased it (just my feeling), and I don't see why they'd be eager to spend hundreds more on a system they chucked in their closet after Wii Sports and Wii Fit got old. Nintendo might be a victim of their own short term success.
My prediction: Wii U will sell, but not close to the levels of Wii. Expect N64/Gamecube-style sales.

If there is an add-on that plays DS games on a big screen, like the Game Boy Player, I'm in. Hell, I was in when they announced Super Smash Bros. 4.

Just as the article says, it would be a mistake to name it WiiU because people will think it's just a simple upgrade. They need to break free from the Wii name and market it as a fresh, new console.

I think they need to redesign the system. It looks too much like the original Wii. That alone will confuse some people.

One of the mistakes already made with the 3DS.

I'm thinking that the Wii U... or whatever they end up calling it... probably won't be launching as a "casual" console...

It's time they correct that name mistake. Revolution isn't that hard to pronounce for people who have all their teeth. As for people who are missing a few, well.....
A name change is a good idea. Joe Sixpack will hear the name Wii U and just think it's a minor upgrade.

Please, dear God, please let this happen.
For all Nintendo says about trying to appeal to everyone, gamers and non-gamers alike, the name Wii is a huge turn off to most teenage to college aged guys, or even older guys. It just sounds stupid. It sounds like baby talk.
When Nintendo started talking about Project Cafe and claiming that they wanted to reconnect with the so-called "hardcore" audience, I thought that meant the new system would have a less goofy-sounding name. Imagine my disappointment when at E3 they announced a name that sounded even more like baby talk than before! Wii U? Seriously, Nintendo?
I know a lot of people think that Nintendo needs to stick with the Wii brand that was so successful for them, but I disagree. I say the Nintendo brand is already strong enough and well known that they shouldn't have to worry about it.
Look, I'm in my 30s, and I've always said that as long as the games are fun it shouldn't matter if it has bright colors or looks like it appeals to kids or whatever, and I stand by that. But at the same time, it would be nice to be able to say the name of the system without sounding like a 2 year old.

They should change it as the name confuses their past and possibly current philosophy/sales pitch:
Wii: "it's not about you but about Wii"
Wii U:"it's not only about wii (we) but about U"
(paraphrased of course)
It's practically a 180 from the Wii by focusing on the single player but yet....not.
It's like they didn't have a name and someone scribbled the title on a napkin and handed it to Reggie before he hit the stage at E3 (or wherever) and said "improvise" while some poor sap behind a keyboard was throwing together a snazzy logo for the presentation.

Among name changes I agree, a redesign would be nice...it looks really wii like...in an interview with a dev from capcom I believe...? recently it was mentioned that Nintendo has done a lot of changes and added quite a bit to the system..so when we see it at E3 it will be complete and different than what we last saw.
I already think Wii is the worst console name ever...Wii-U is even worse...one whole hyphen and letter worse.

There's no question that this needs to happen. I think the correlation to what has happened to the 3DS is a perfect example to what will happen with the Wii-U. Revolution sounds great to me. It does need to be redesigned as well. Just take a look at all their past systems. Not one of them is remotely alike.

I concur. Not only does the name Wii U sound too similar to the Wii, the design is way too close to the Wii's.
If they want to draw in more adult gamers, they need to re-brand the console entirely.

agree with making the system look different. If the Big N is going to make a gaming system, then they need to change it up. Many that bought the Wii will not probably buy the next system(casual gamers) Cautiously optimistic.

I don't really care what it looks like, or what they call it. They need to have actual, for real big boy online functionality and allow the transfer of Virtual Console titles from the Wii. If they check those boxes I'll be fine.
I mean, they sold upwards of 100 million consoles with a name thats makes everyone immediately think "penis" that looked like a rough Apple product prototype. I don't see the problem.

Wii U is too close in name to Wii...just as 3DS was too close to DS (and confused millions of grandmothers/soccer moms).
I've been saying this for months.
It's nice to see gaming journalists and Nintendo big-wigs are finally catching up to my expert analysis.

They already announced the Nintendo Network which sounds awesome at the moment, but nothing has been seen. It will support a user name based system , DLC, full games to download, and support homebrews like psn and xbla for indie dev's

It should be the Nintendo G Wiiz.
The problem with the 3DS was that there were already other versions before it. There was the DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, and the 3DS. How is the average consumer supposed to realize that the last version is suddenly a completely new system unlike the previous 3 revisions? The DSi wasn't considered a new system even though it added an online shop and had special DSi enhanced games, why would people think any differently with the 3DS when it sounds like a DS but with added 3D? At least the Wii doesn't have this problem, it would just be the Wii and the Wii U. The names are still stupid but I don't think they'll be as confusing as the 3DS. I also still haven't found a 3DS kiosk to try it out, I'm not sure why it's treated like it's some sort of secret or something.

This is really not much of a rumor. Even if you ignore the stupidity of the name "Wii U", it's not at all unlikely that Nintendo will change the name of their console before release. Or have we all forgotten the Revolution, Dolphin, and Ultra 64?

Wii is a silly name that makes one think of a male body part. They should call the next one the Premium Nintendo Entertainment System, or PNES for short. No one could ever make fun of that name.

Haha, for a second i was o.O but that was just because of my tired mind :P
As for a name change, I tried thinking of my own one but none i come up with seem to fit in with Nintendo. For some reason Nintendo Catacomb popped in my mind >.<
