View Full Version : Gonna get me some Dead Space...

I seldom play newer games at all. But L4D got me, and my kid brother is always on the lookout for a modern game I'll like. So, he introduced me to Dead Space 2 the other day. Wow, shovelware this ain't! I want it, oh-so-bad. Now here's my issue: My 360 is still on ice (Ernest's Dog!), and I have no PS3. Is it worth repairing my 360 (again!!!) to get DS1 or 2, or is Extraction for the Wii close to the same thing? I don't see me playing all 3 to completion, I just wanna rock one of em when I want. Your thoughts?

Listen to me VERY CAREFULLY.
Dead Space: Extraction on the Wii is NOT a substitute for Dead Space! This is by no means a condemnation if the Wii game, but you have to understand that it's a different game altogether; it's more of an on rails experience. Do yourself a favor and give SERIOUS consideration to getting the original Dead Space and playing through it first. It's absolutely worth playing though this series in order. I've never started the second installment yet, but the first is one of the best, most terrifying experiences I've ever had in gaming. I literally had to turn off the system and MAKE myself go back to each for like 3 quarters of the game. I wasn't desensitized to the freakiness of Dead Space until the last 2 chapters.
Now, I'm a horror game FIEND, and I don't expect other gamers to be moved by games the way that I am, but the first Dead Space did the impossible in that it actually tore me from my adherence to the modern Resident Evil series as the action horror standard in gaming. The game is an absolute masterpiece, IMO, and one of the only reasons that I haven't started the second one after finishing the over 6 months ago is because the experience is still resonating with me and I wanted to make it last. :^/
I can't believe that I let the original game marinate on my shelf for over a year until I played it, and when I did I was hooked from the jump. Don't make my mistake. There are only 24 hours in a day, and you can never get that time you're wasting back! @_@

I agree, it's an amazing game. I can count the modern games I enjoy enough to play over my older games on one hand... L4D, L4D2, and now Dead Space 2. I want to try the 1st, but I'm gonna need a new console or a repair... I won't play all of them all the wat through, I'm almost certain of this, so I can wait to acquire all of them till the gen drives the prices down. But I want one of em just to play. And Extraction ain't the same experience you say... Dammit. Thanks.

Dead Space 2 is even better than 1. Crazy good game. The opening sequence is absolute top five ever.
Get your 360 fixed and play Dead Space.

If you have a decent PC (dual-core would do fine), it should run the game just as well as the 360.

dead space 1 was waste of 20 dollars for me....it was a waste in the sense that it scared me to the point that i vowed never to play that shit again lol, wow is all i have to say, i consider myself a pretty jaded gamer and i've bought or played damn near every single survival horror or just plain horror game out there, dead space is the shit nightmares are made of, lol i swear to god the only way i can get through this is during daylight hours and with the sound as low as possible as its primarily the sound that will fuck you up, this game honestly slowed my breathing down and raised my pulse to the point where i could almost hear my heart beating, lol yo im not going back son, not for a longgggggg longggggggg time

Seriously, I was the same way at first. I really had to back up off of this game. I'd play it at night, when it was cold, and I have surround sound in my gameroom, which I would crank. All stupid, stupid, stupid. I turned this game off so much, it was ridiculous. I'd tell the wife (who nursed me through sleepless nights due to Silent Hill 2 years ago) about how I've never been so scared in my life, knowing that she, who doesn't play these types of games, just wouldn't 'get it'. Hell, most gamers probably don't get it, but something about being in that clattering, BROKEN, claustrophobic tomb, floating in space, with limited air and zero gravity (in some places), limited ammunition, and undead 'things' in places you can't see them, just fucked me up beyond. Waaay beyond.
I won't try to convince you to go back to it, man.

If you guys want scared, play Siren: Blood Curse or Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
I'm not bragging that "dur, I'm better at being scared at video games": I'm just saying that Dead Space and Dead Space 2 are pretty good, but Amnesia literally made me scream and turn off the computer, and Siren made my girlfriend hide under a blanket for three hours while I played. If you like horror games and haven't tried them, you absolutely should.

Got Dead Space 1 today for the 360. Two copies, actually, one for my brother. Time to fix the box!

I don't have a gaming PC, but thanks.
And thanks to Emporer Megas and G Boobie for replying quick to my thread. I was able to get it today, and didn't have to wait around for 2 opinions, which beat the hell outta my ignorance. Now, time to curse at Microsoft...

Yeah, it's the not so great version unfortunately. It's still incredibly scary, but it's HARD. NINTENDO MALE PORN STAR ON METH HARD.
If you can deal with the difficulty, or don't mind using a FAQ, it's great. The one I'm talking about is the sort of re-make, which is available on PS3. You can download it chapter by chapter on PSN (it isn't available as a disc in North America, because SCEA is dumb), or you can import the Asian version for twenty bucks. It's entirely in english.

lol this is awkward, because i actually have amnesia dark descent (on onlive) and honestly found it boring and uninteresting for the short amount of time i did spend with it not to mention completely UNscary lol if thats even a word, to be fair i really havent spent too much time playing it, and i also spent a decent amount watching a friend play it onlive as i spectated and same thing, didnt feel shit, maybe i need more time or wateva but it just aint hit me, i have siren for the ps2 as well but only played around a hour of it, not enough to form an opnion of it, might give it a shot one of these days, but honestly, if we're talking about jump out of your chair screaming, no game has ever gotten me like dead space during the opening elevator scene lol
i still get nightmares cuz of that shit, lol this fucking game does not hold your hand, there was no warm up break in period, it was straight heart attack season almost right out of the gate, i'd go more into it but i dont want to fuck it up with spoilers for people who have yet to play
I got Dead Space 1 awhile back from Steam for only $5, so I couldn't pass up playing it on my PC. Even better, I got Dead Space 2 for free via this Amazon $5 gift card thing that I got for buying some other game. I'm currently playing thru the early levels of DS1. Loving it!

Dead Space is so good that I started a 2nd playthrough immediately after finishing it for the first time. As soon as the game credits finished...I clicked "New Game". It's that good. Beat it on the hardest difficulty last year right before Dead Space 2 came out.
Love both games...the 2nd being slightly better due to the "improvements" with the zero-g sequences. Those were the only blemish of the first game IMO.

Yeah, I loved playing Dead Space 1 on the PS3, with the lights down low and the surround sound cranked up. I completed about 50%, then got stuck in a level with little fire-power to complete it. I keep telling myself I'll go back, but I have such a huge backlog of games. I plan on playing it soon though, since I found Dead Space 2 : CE (PC) for $20.

Well, so much for that. :) That's fair. I don't know what it was about Amnesia that got me, but it's the only game to ever get me so bad that I had to stop playing it for a while. No joke. I hit a certain part and literally screamed, hit the power button on the PC, and got myself a drink.
The PS2 Siren is a good game, but it's nut-crushingly hard. Unfairly, in some spots. Give it a try, but have the FAQ ready. Or, you should check out Blood Curse on PSN: download the first chapter.

Both Dead Space games were great, I have Extraction as well (with my copy of DS2 for ps3) but I haven't played it. I think for the most part the 1st game was my favourite, i felt more isolated in it. Dead Space 2 was by no means in my mind far off from that greatness but i didnt feel the same as i did in the first all the way through. I will agree though DS2's mechanics were tightened. Aww damn now i wanna replay them! >.>

I personally have played DS1 and DS2 and I have to say they they both are great games. These games sucked me into the story so deeply that I told my wife to lock the door when she leaves and hurry up and leave at that! Ok, so not really that hard-core about it, but I loved those games so much. In fact my brother just picked me up a copy of DS1 fairly recently and I took Skyrim out so I could play it again. These games I made sure to get every achievement in both of them.
The first was miles ahead of the second, but both were really good, except for the intro to the second. The start of it, where the guy turns to a zombie in front of you reminded me of a kid who is starved for attention "Look at me. Look at me. Are you looking at me yet? How about now?"
I haven't played DS2 yet, but I do know that DS1 should have won a freaking oscar for the sound design in the game. If you have a higher end sound system, and really crank it, it will almost make you shit your pants at times... Seriously.... Playing it in the dark, on a projector screen, with everybody gone and the volume very high, it can literally give me a decent fright at times! Sound design is so underrated amongst the general populace. Amazing sound can take a good game and make it GREAT.

I let a friend borrow it and he said the same thing, "I'm too scared". He was also afraid of the scene in 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure' where Large Marge tells him "...and when they pulled the body from the mangled wreck, it looked like THIS!!!", with the distorted face.
You afraid of Pee-Wee too?

You've already bought the 360 version, so this really isn't going to help, but if your computer is less than 5 years old, you more than likely have a PCI-E X16 slot on the board.
You could play the game on your PC, with a cheap card that would cost you much less than buying another 360.

Aww damn now i wanna replay them! >.>I've been playing part 2 for the past couple weeks, and I have to agree. It's the isolation of being on the Ishimura that REALLY horrified me in the first one. The second is absolutely outstanding, and I don't want my favoring of the first to come across as a condemnation by any stretch, plus I haven't completed part two yet, either. I will say that it seems like they KNEW that people would feel this way about the game and they really took the time to implement things to compensate for the security of the new setting.
Like dropping you RIGHT into a shit storm out of the gate, and the way that you have to manage ammo a lot better this time around, making impalement kills more of a factor in the game play. And I don't know if they had the alternate beacon's in the first game (for finding things besides your objective, stores, benches, etc.), but it's awesome.
Everything about the Dead Space series seems thoroughly thought out. Unlike Resident Evil, you can walk and shoot at the same time in Dead Space, but you can't RUN and shoot at the same time. You can't 'quick turn' in Dead Speace, which I honestly would have appreciated them including, but I know that it was left out by design. You don't have good visibility, or a flash light, so you have to use your weapon's site as a torch, which again, requires you to WALK at a potting pace, least you run through the darkness, since again, you can't run and shoot at the same time. Also, the way that they implement the stasis and telekinesis puzzles rarely seems forced, and it such a clever mechanic in general, and the schematic downloads for the store kiosks are brilliant. Hell, the STORE is brilliant! They took a concept like the retarded magical Resident Evil storage chests and made it viable.
The new Necromorphs are also awesome, and really make you employ tactics (like those damn sneaky things that peek around corners). I can't praise these games enough.
I haven't played DS2 yet, but I do know that DS1 should have won a freaking oscar for the sound design in the game. I really crank it, and only play it in the dark. You'd be doing a disservice to yourself not to.
I have a question about the second game. Is it just me, or are there more Marker pieces floating around in the back and foreground of the title screen the farther in the game you get? I don't really remember there being (m)any at all when I started playing, then I paid attention to them once and wonder how I missed them before, now that I'm really deep into the second half of the game, I see TONS of them floating around on the title/loading screen. Were they always there?

Yeah, when you first start DS2 there are no pieces of the marker in the background of the title screens and menus. As you progress more and more of the turn up until\... well you will just have to beat the game, cuz I aint telling you all of it. Its nothing important but just hate to ruin things in V-games because I kinda consider myself a connoisseur of them.
