I don't have any master system games to test it with but the box says MEGA DRIVE instead of SEGA genesis, and the converter it's self also says that,
Would this even work on an american sega genesis or should I sell this as "PAL ONLY" when I list it for sale?
Also, what can I ask for it?

Yep, that's an European converter allright.
I'd test it on a US Genesis to be sure.

Don't quote me on this (and someone else should chime in) but I *think* that will work fine with a NTSC system.

Master System converters like many things have a fascinating history.
Compatibility charts would be nice. (excluding mods of course, I know at least Nomad can be modded to restore SMS mode.)
The first US/PAL converter should run on US/PAL model 1 and CDX. It was sold in Canada also.
Japan's edition is different. Likely a Mark III top slot, and shaped to fit the JPN console. But I can't find photo evidence...
The model 2 converter only reached PAL regions. Full support of most US and PAL consoles.
I believe Sega did not release a model 2 converter to fit JPN consoles, with card slot, or with Mark III slot.
So anyway. Yes you can modify this new found converter to fit your X'eye. Goofy as the idea may look it'll play if not broken.

Hah, I hadn't even thought of using it on my e'eye but it's an option.
IS there a definitive asnwer here or should I just wait until I find a master system game to test it with?

I'm pretty sure it just acts as a pass through allowing SMS games to physically fit in the Genesis, and since you can play European SMS games on North American systems I would assume that this will also work on a North American system.

Makes sense. What's the "card input" for?

Card input is for a few smaller games. IIRC mostly not very good. Also required by the 3D glasses.
Several card games were put on carts in Europe though.
It's also said that Genesis dropped that JPN lockout of US/PAL Master System. Letting Mark III card games play. Of course I haven't seen it tried.
Master System games use the base console's mode. Region switches will affect them the same way. Necessary for a few later PAL optimized games. (still the majority were programmed ready for the US market even if not reaching us)
