Hey everyone,

There are different types of video game collectors, but I think most will agree that it's about quality in a collection, not about quantity.
Quality can be in rarity, price, gameplay, memories you have with a game or the way you acquired it for your collection.

In this video i showcase the top 5 items in my collection and explain why I picked them.

With this video I hope to inspire other collectors to make a (video) reply in which they show their top 5 items, with the story behind them.

The video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeYo2tuqQm8

I'm looking forward to see your replies!

Great idea! I only wish I had a video camera to make one. You will have to put up with a text version I am afraid.

In no particular order (and most of these are actually groups of items):

A) My laseractive player with S-1, S-10, N-1 and N-10 pacs. (I thought I would spare the world a lot of torture by not acquiring the karaoke pac) - while these things were ridiculously expensive when released the very idea was pretty nifty.

B) The seven lunar silver star discs for the Sega CD - I am a sucker for sets of things and Lunar is one of my top three favorite sega cd games - along with Dark Wizard and Shining Force CD.

C) Along the same lines as B, the four Dragon Force CDs for the Saturn.

D) A playstation 2 display light - about four feet wide and eight inches high - simply a metal box with a face plate that says playstation 2 with the logo which is backlit by a flourescent light.

E) This one may be cheating somewhat but I really like maps for my games. I am pretty good with excel
and have made maps for Warsong and Golden Axe Warrior (this one is huge and prints out on nine 11x17
sheets for the big version). I recently figured out how to produce hex grid maps (the grids are easy to
make - coloring the hexes is a whole different story) and have recently done complete sets of maps for Dark Wizard and Brigandine.

None of these items are particularly valuable, but they are amongst my favorites in my video game collection.

1) Pong- Atari's Home Console.

This was just such a cool find from Craigslist for $10. The unit is so damn cool looking with its wood grain and built in paddles. The battery powered speaker is just icing on the cake. It is also one of the only games my wife will play with me, which makes it extra special.

2) Virtual Boy with box and a smattering of games.

My wife's friend gave this to me because she said it was broke, and she figured that if I could get it to work I'd enjoy it more than her. Well, after using my 4.5 security bit to open up the thing, I found two game covers stuck in the cartridge slot. Easy fix! I can only play the games for 10-15 minutes at a time, but I love the way the rescued failed Nintendo system looks in my collection.

3) NES Toploader.

I got my Toploader for a great price on eBay along with four dogbone controllers, a NES 4 Score, and a zapper. The main reason I like the system is because my curiosity had reached the breaking point concerning how it measured up to the original NES. While I think it falls short, I like the way it looks and that it confirms the superiority of the my childhood NES.

4) My childhood box of 100 or so Atari 2600 games.

I am surprised these survived my dad's impulse to throw away my childhood memories- my Commodore 64, sadly, was not so lucky. Just looking at the cartridges makes me feel warm inside.

5) My modded Famicom Hudson Joycard.

I bought a broke Joycard from a Japanese eBay seller on a hope and a prayer. I took the cord of another similarly designed generic NES controller and soldered it to the Joycard's pcb, and lo' and behold! It worked. It is a beautiful joystick and it plays great too!

5) NTSC-J model Saturn in mint condition and found locally and cheaply for $85 with 4 games

4) Stunt Race FX - complete copies of PAL, US and JAP versions of my favourite game of all time

3) Mint, boxed seemingly unused front loader NES I found at op shop for $5

2) Super Mario All-Stars SNES set
It's not my original, but it's as close as I'll ever get.

1) My original Nintendo 64 purchased on August 30th 1997
I still regret trading in my original SNES in on it, that I'd bought a couple years prior, but at least I still have this. :)

The ones you'd have to kill me or threaten mine to get:

1) Buster Douglas KO Boxing, SMS. I got it in a deal where I was otigianlly asking about a M1 Sega CD on CL, and asked if he has any SMS games. Yes, he did :D Sold my extra last year, but this one is a lot nicer, and it was totally unexpected on this deal. I already knew I was coming out way ahead.

2) CIB (sans registration card) Custer's Revenge, Atari 2600. Got it from DP. Any game this bad has got to stay in my collection.

3) Atari Jr with games form my childhood. Durp. Initials from me and my sister from the early 80's. Yeah, those are for sale.

4) Atari Heavy Sixer. It's mine. It's made in Sunnyvale, CA. USA. Like nothing is anymore.

5) Sega CDX. Smokin' CL deal for 12 games with the CDX for $80, cause the CDX had a blown fuse. Still has a bit o wire jumping it for confirmation, one day, I will finalize the repairs...

1. My Sega CDX, due to a whole slew of reasons. It's smaller and easier to set up than a Genesis with Sega CD, and it's rare.
2. My Panzer Dragoon Saga and Shining Force 3. Both bought brand new back in the Day.
3. Earthworm Jim for the Genesis. I paid $90 for this game, brand new. Plus tax that's like $105 I remember my dad thought I was out of my mind. I was 13 at the time. It's the most money I ever spent on a game, and I got my use out of it too.
4. Mortal Kombat for the Genesis. My Dad got me that game. I was 11. He heard it was the most violent game ever and said he was doing his duty to support my juvenile delinquency.
5.Christmas Nights. Just because it's so weird.

I have a lot but I think if I narrow it down to five, these are some random ones:

1) My JVC Wondermega
2) My Panasonic Q (sadly, it can't play games or DVDs properly anymore)
3) My original copy of Snatcher for the Sega CD
4) My original copy of Lunar: EB for the Sega CD....and my set of 7 Lunar TSS covers :)
5) Christmas Nights for the Saturn

He said he bought it new, I assume he means when it first came out... I remember some genesis games were pretty pricie back then...I NEVER remember Genesis games being $90.00+ stateside. The most I ever knew anyone to pay for a new Genesis game BITD was $80 when my friend bought Phantasy Star III, and that way uncommonly high.

Was this $100+ Earthworm Jim a Canadian purchase or something?

Impossible for me to just name 5.

My entire Ys collection
My Misadventures of Tron Bonne & MM64,MML2 I love my Shenmue collection

My gaming magazines

One I do prize is my signed poster of Okamiden from the games director my friend at R* gave me.

It's just to hard. The is the cheap way out maybe but true. My fave part of my collection..is my collection. The whole thing is out of love. Sure got a few rare stuff but everything I have I love. has a certain emotion or memory attached to it. Asking me to pick 5 is like asking me what one of your kids do you lost most.

I remember paying $84 for either Shining Force II or Phantasy Star IV when they came out - one was that much and the other wasn't far behind. (Adding insult to injury was the fact that the games were in those wretched cardboard boxes. @_@ ) I don't know if Earthworm Jim was in that pirce range but it was possible - calculate in store pricing variations and state/local taxes (which can be pretty high depending where it was purchased) and the $90 figure is understandable - especially when the human tendency to round things off one way or the other is taken into consideration.

What the heck? Man, Genesis games were almost never more then $60 where I bought them, and rarely ever that much. The exceptions where they were more are few and far between, and they were always RPGs tha were more. Some of you guys were getting robbed. No wonder so many people are content paying $60+ for new games today. It's a step down from what you use to pay. :|

Well, if you factor inflation into the mess, it's still hard to find a higher price than the $40+ my pops paid per Atari 2600 game in 1980. But yeah, I agree, it's way too much.

I know for a fact that Phantasy Star IV was $99.99 when it first came out, not because I bought it then (screw that!), but because I actually have a copy with the shrinkwrap that still has the price sticker from EBGames on it. When I first saw that I was pretty amazed that people were actually willing to drop that on a cart. Heck, even some games for the SNES like Chrono Trigger were like $80 new.

In no particular order:

-The original 17 games that I had for the Atari VCS. That was my first collecting goal back in 1995. I'm not going to name them though.

-All of the US released VCS Activision games. That was my 2nd collecting goal. That one took a bit longer. I would like to get them all complete someday.

-My SNES. I was champing at the bit to get one and my fiance kept telling me that we couldn't afford it. That was because she bought it for me as my wedding present. :)

-My Atari VCS Game Center. You couldn't swing a dead cat in a flea market in the 90s without hitting one of these, but I have not seen any since then.

-My boxed Atari VCS. Got it at a garage sale (yes, in the mid 90s) with about 10 games for 5 bucks. MY wife was working at KayBee Toys at the time, and I brought it to the store and looked it up in the SKU book. I could have returned it to KayBee for 40 bucks. I'm glad I didn't.

1. Daytona USA CE Netlink - supposedly the rarest US Saturn title
2. Boxed Vectrex with 15 boxed/complete games - got this one off Ebay in the late 90's for much less than they go for these days
3. Earthbound (SNES) boxed/complete - Christmas present the year it came out; will always have a soft spot for the game
4. NIB Turbo Duo - purchased two sometime around 2000 due to questions about durability and never had problems with the first one
5. Panzer Dragoon Saga (SAT) - every bit as good as they say it is; actually have two copies, picked up a second a copy from Toys R US back when they were getting rid of their Saturn games though the shrinkwrap is a little beat up

I bought Phantasy Star IV from EB the year it was released (not at launch though) for $59.99, IIRC. I've never payed more than $60 for a new Genesis game. Did different regions have different pricing or something? And SNES games were always more than Genesis games, so it's not strange that Chrono Trigger was that much.

Come listen to a story of a land called "CANADA" Where prices are high and so are the taxes.

When the game came out, it was priced at $89.99 in Canada. In fact I remember buying NHL 94 for 69.99 and that was the least I had ever spent for a new game.

Take 90 Canadian dollars, add %15 tax and you have $103.48 total price.

1. My signed limited edition Psychonauts print. 50 of them were made and I got it from DoubleFine's store a few years ago. It's really good looking and having Tim Schafer's autograph = awesome.
2. Panzer Dragoon Saga - my wife got it for me for Hanukkah a few years ago and it was a huge surprise
3. Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition - I've got number 408 out of 1000 made.
4. Autographed photo of Ralph Baer
5. Space Invaders Extreme lithograph - they made a few of these to celebrate the release of SIE and a friend of mine won one in an online contest. huh? where?

TC's posted this at another board. If I'm not mistaken, it's a copy and paste and hence, there's your answer.

As for my top 5... it'd be something like

-Panzer Dragoon Saga Saturn CIB
-Earthbound SNES CIB
-Mega Man X3 SNES CIB
-Aero Fighters SNES CIB
-Harvest Moon SNES CIB

But for non-games, it's easily my entire 47-issue (plus the rare Super Play GOLD 1993 issue) of SUPER PLAY MAGAZINE

Best SNES mag ever, hands down.

Best of all, they're mostly in mint condition with no torn pages, the previous owner kept it in great shape. Won a 45 issue lot back in 2006 for just $183 shipped. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime eBay purchases. Nowadays, SP is very sought after and good luck finding the entire set in very good condition for anything less than $500...

Great topic. So many possible answers, but here's what jumps into my head first:

#1 The TurboDuo. Bought it for $99 on sale at Toys 'R Us way back in the day, and it remains my favorite (and most tragic) console ever. Keep in mind that it was packages with Ys I & II, Ninja Spirit, and a 3-game disc with Bonk's Adventure, Bonk's Revenge, Gate of Thunder, and with a code you could unlock the original Bomberman as well. This console remains one of the best and most impressive pieces of hardware ever created.

#2 Einhander (PS1). One of the greatest shmups I've ever played. If only Square could rise to the occasion again...

#3 Golden Axe (Genesis). Because I've played it a bazillion times, it introduced me to the joys of co-op play, and I still think it's one of the greatest beat 'em ups (though some would specify hack 'n slash) ever created.

#4 Gate of Thunder (TurboGrafx-16 CD). The Sega CD seemed cool at first, but once I played this on a tremendous failure of a competitor I realized the true potential in sound and music and parallax scrolling that CD titles represented.

#5 Bomberman '93. After I assembled the five player tap and the maximum number of joypads, this proved to be the best party game ever. No alcohol required. Just choose your stage and throw down and infinite fun ensued.

So much more, and I'm so tempted to edit this list, but to keep it short and sweet I'll just click submit.
