Have you ever heard of the comma? It makes deciphering word salads a much, much easier chore, and the ladies go wild for it. WILD. Trust me on the latter part! :pimp:

So... is JoshTheNESNerd a spambot? Without he/she/it posting a link, I fail to see the motive for spamming, unless, of course, there are links that follow in future posts or threads.

There do seem to be a lot of new users around here these days. I'm beginning to think that one of two things must be happening - and maybe both:
-Something's happened with the site upgrade to improve the way DigitPress shows up in the search engines, and all these people with less than 30-50 posts are legit classic gamers just finding this place for the first time. This is a bit harder for me to believe...DP is kind of a big brand when it comes to classic gaming (esp. due to the "rarity guide"); it's hard to miss.
I'm not sure Joe realizes (maybe he does?) just how much equity he has in the brand, not just in his store and its inventory. What I'm saying is: the DP brand has value in and of itself, because of its history / pedigree and whatever. Heck, this board - with the wealth of information about all sorts of obscure / not obscure video games - is practically a gold mine for this hobby. Not an organized gold mine - people have to dig for it - but still. Sure, more could be done to develop the brand and capitalize on it (even if the capital gets ploughed back into the brand and the information quality - say, paying someone to update the rarity guide) - I can think of a few things just off the top of my head - but it is worth something.
-Spammers are (also?) finding this place and have decided that, because of the brand's caché and value, we're a good group here to market something to: video games, other gaming website, etc. Maybe they see that the DP Servbot is aggressively pulling in articles from Joystiq and Slashdot - a marketer sees this, and puts two and two together: first, get blurb on one of those sites, then send spammers to comment favorably on DP (and other) threads when they "re-tweet" it. I myself am a marketer by trade, so I understand this line of logic...I also happen to think it's somewhat lazy and more than a little unethical, but I'm sure not everyone agrees.
Keep in mind that not all spammers are bots - some of them have real people behind the wheel, being paid to be "guerrilla marketers" to people. Video game companies already try to bribe and strong-arm game "journalists" into giving games good reviews; paying moles and spammers to infiltrate game boards would be par for the course for them. I know I've posted this before:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_62/363-Im-Evil
Some things to note from the article:
-Some of them are extraordinarily careful. Clumsy attempts to throw spam links in a first post are hallmarks of an amateur; there are pros out there.
-They switch and spoof IPs to fool the mods.
-They sometimes lurk for weeks or months (or years?), starting a bunch of legitimate topics to "build trust" before they start in with the ads.
-Some of them start multiple accounts, posing as different people. I'm thinking specifically of the "production errors" thread where wrk (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/member.php?28658-wrk) says to hybrid0 (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/member.php?25032-hybrid0): "good work getting this up here, Jeff!" Are all the newbies (and there are quite a few) posting in that thread different people? Maybe; maybe not.
So...is it legit? Or not legit? If these guys are doing their jobs right, it will be really hard to say, and pretty impossible to defend against without draconian measures, which I don't think DP can do without ticking a lot of people off. I myself am always a little suspicious of new people that seem to be a little too active / eager with the "question" threads: "What's your favorite <genre / system / era / having a specific feature / whatever> game?" or "How rare is / are <some specific game / games in a specific set>?" (see: Gunstar Hero (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/member.php?31904-Gunstar-Hero)) Of course, maybe they just can't use the search function to find the 10 other threads that already went over the same topic a year / two / five ago. Just don't be too surprised when peeps of this sort start to go to modern gaming and chime in on threads about new releases or start hyping up whatever that ridiculous slabbing agency is that freezes MIB games in carbonite for big bucks to sell to some Jabba somewhere.
After reading this post again, I really just don't like the idea I'm positing: the idea that someone would take the brand that Joe built up and "leech" off it - try to use it to further their own profit margin or bottom line. It doesn't sit well with me, especially since Joe can't quite be as active these days (or perhaps it's that he doesn't want to - I don't blame him, with some individuals being rather uncharitable towards him b/c of his condition). I'm sure to some degree or another, it's happening, this leeching off the brand to pimp products - maybe not very much, maybe a lot - I don't know - but it has to be. It's a low thing to do. The least they could do is come to him and offer to pay for the privilege of doing so. They might get turned down, but it would be a lot more ethical, business-wise. The things that can be done with data really make sneaky tactics like this obsolete and unnecessary, but because it's easier...anyways. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Interesting read. As a primarily retro gaming forum (our "Classic Gaming" forum has roughly three times the amount of threads and posts of the "Modern Gaming" forum), there really aren't very many new products to shill towards our community. Yeah, there are the knock off and handheld famiclones, Chinese multicarts, and the occasional new retro toy that comes out, so I don't think it would be impossible for us to have a few OGMs amongst our midst. If they were OGMs, I seriously doubt they would be in the same class as "Jack" from the Escapist article. Any companies trying to plug their retro wares wouldn't have the resources to hire marketing assassins like that fellow. In all likelihood, it would be an extra assignment of someone who was working at the company or the head honcho himself/herself, trying to put some extra cash directly into his/her pocket.
To be honest, my biggest interest in JoshTheNESNerd and his/its posts is that I can't be 100% certain if he/it is human or a bot. It intrigues the hell out of me that us humans as symbol (language) using creatures, can be call into question the sentience of another symbol using "entity" because, even though their use of symbols is close, something is "off".
I work as a writing tutor at a University, so I occasionally see some writing that is so bad that if it were posted on this forum, I might question if its author was a bot or not, too. It isn't just bad sentence structures and grammar that I'm talking about, either. Some students just can't convey proper thoughts into written form. Because most of us on this forum are adept at writing, it is hard for us to imagine (until you look at the comments in Youtube videos, of course) how others couldn't use writing to properly convey their thoughts the way that we can. For some people, there is a very real disconnect between their thoughts and their writing, to where I can ask them what they intended to say with a f*cked up sentence, and they tell me perfectly what they meant to say, BUT they can not write it out. I see it from time to time at the writing center. If JoshTheNESNerd has a learning disability or is just a poor writer, I feel bad for my questioning of his sentience- bad enough, actually, to help him learn to write more proficiently. Providing he is a kid and not a bot, just using an occasional period and comma would make a world of difference.

Oh, one more thing, calthaer: I'd say it is safe to assume that JoshTheNESNerd is NOT "Jack," the OGM from the Escapist article. ;)
I'm really not sure why you think it's safe to assume that...I'm not saying he necessarily is, but certainly wouldn't go so far as to say that he isn't. Unless you're talking about him not being that SPECIFIC OGM instead of just an OGM in general? The trolls / spammers take on other personas, from teenage girls to cranky old men, as the article said. I know you're all into the philology of the thing here, but it's perfectly possible for someone to ape an illiterate teenage boy, if for whatever twisted reason they wanted to. Why are you so sure?
I also wouldn't assume the fact that the classic gaming board has more posts than the modern one means that there isn't much to market to the audience of this board. You probably haven't been around long enough to know that the two of them used to be the same board at one point - modern might have fewer posts only because it hasn't been around as long. I myself have checked games out - and subsequently decided to purchase them - merely because the long-standing members of this board have given them a positive mention. That kind of targeted marketing power is worth spending real money to reach.
Marketers spend money towards that end (either in the form of data leases, surveys, email blasts, catalogs, direct mail, promo items, or the less savory method of OGMs, I'm sure) each and every day. Big companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars hiring teams of PhD statisticians to formulate mathematical models to categorize and select people who would be likely to purchase their products. Compared to that, spending a couple (tens of?) thousand to hire an OGM to pimp your product is a relative steal - especially on a message board that still has some semblance of "authenticity," like DP. Because there are lots of avid and knowledgeable gamers here, one tends to believe that the people here really know their stuff. But you can go ahead and assume OGM isn't happening - fine by me, really; whatever floats your boat.
It's certainly possible that Josh here is a regular bloke. I'm just saying that there's also a possibility he isn't. You really can't know, if they're good, that someone is OGM - you can just be sure that there are some of them around.
That being said, I'm not even sure this thread belongs in classic gaming any more - it's wandered so far afield...

I am talking about that specific OGM. I doubt "Jack," assuming he is indeed the master chameleon of video gaming forums, would assume the persona of JoshTheNESNerd to infiltrate our ranks. As this thread has proven, he has done a poor job of remaining inconspicuous.
You probably haven't been around long enough to know that the two of them used to be the same board at one point...
I haven't. I am coming up on my first year's anniversary, by the way, just in case you want to celebrate the occasion by gifting me Pocky n Rocky 2.
But you can go ahead and assume OGM isn't happening - fine by me, really; whatever floats your boat.
Please take note of this past post:
... I don't think it would be impossible for us to have a few OGMs amongst our midst.
The reason that I previously wrote:
If they were OGMs, I seriously doubt they would be in the same class as "Jack" from the Escapist article.
is because I thought that most people on DP were like I am- primarily retro gamers, who merely dabble in the occasional new fangled video games of this generation. I tend to impose my thinking onto others more often than I ought to, which leads to faulty conclusions more often than I'd like. I was definitely not impugning the value, credibility, or prestige of DP, calthaer. I just, wrongly, assumed that this wasn't the forum for this generation's video gaming. Because retro gaming is (again with my assumptions) a niche market, I didn't think someone like "Jack," who I imagine fetches a decent fee for his services, would be within the price range of a smaller company who created a neo-retro video game product. That's all.

I could be wrong, but I think JoshTheNESNerd is not a spambot. Is it so hard to believe that he is just a kid with below average writing ability?

That was your first mistake. Use your 3DS for games and your PC for the internet. As you may have figured out by now, it's better that way.

If I'm interpreting correctly, this THREAD is where we are to discuss NES/SNES collecting? I must ask what the poll has to do with any of that though....
because, fool they are all rare nes or snes games and you are a typing taco that has resorted to cannibalism

... and now we're back to this:
Threads mimicking the section of the forums where they were posted always feels like the OP is trying to divide by zero.
Your thread is too vague and you gave no impetus for discussion in your original post. If you have a specific aspect of NES or SNES collecting you wish to talk about then you should make a thread for that specific aspect (assuming one does not already exist) and state your view on the topic in your first post. For example, you wish to talk about the subject in your poll, so you would make a thread with the title "Rare NES Game You Would Most Prefer to Own" and in your original post you would say which game you would prefer and why. After which, you would then invite others to state their preference and their reason for such.
Dividing by zero is frowned upon, for the result is 4chan.

Eh? What does all of the mean even? A typing cannibalistic taco ? Do you have Tourette's of the fingers?
And son, this might be a thread to discuss these rare games but you make no real effort to indicate that in your original post not to mention that your typing makes everyone think you are either mentally challenged or a bot or even both for that matter.
As a general aside it's probably a bad way to start off your posting career by calling people fools or idiots.

Your grammar and inability to identify a joke seems to indicate someone else being a idiot....

well you can post links but just don't repeatedly say it in 3 or more posts or i will find out if & how to use the ban hammer
Hmm. NO. You're not a mod here and do not have control over banning people in threads on these forums. Again, please use the search engine and think before writing a reply or starting a new thread. Ask yourself: do I add anything to the discussion, or am I trolling? If it's the second choice, then don't post.
Again, I strongly encourage you to read the FAQ that you'll find just below the huge Digital Press logo on top of the window before continuing to reply to posts or start new threads.
