Thinking about picking it up... I never had it the first time around. Does it really add alot of replay value to 2 and 3 or is it a gimmick?

It doesn't add much replay value to 2 and 3, unless you just like climbing on stuff a lot. The game itself is pretty decent on its own, I would get it for that.

Considering how cheap you can get it these days, my answer is OF COURSE!

Some would have argued that point when it first came out. I bought it and I felt that it added enough replay value for me. More so was the fact that it could be played on it's own. It's a good game. If you're a Sonic fan I think it's a must own.

Buy it if you own Sonic 3. It adds the S&K levels to the S3 game and 2 more save slots. This was the way it was meant to be played.

As for Sonic 2, it just lets you play as Knuckles, nothing else.

And for Sonic 1, it lets you play any level of the blue sphere bonus stage. To play as Knuckles in Sonic 1 you will have to download a ROM hack.

I wonder if anyone makes repro carts of this, I would love to get my hands on it.

Get it! I got mine for 10 bucks, so there's no reason not to.

My initial response to this is, "I can't believe this question is being asked." Well if you like Sonic the answer is automatically yes. It will never be better than what Sonic 3 & Knuckles offers you. Sega will never make Sonic that good ever again.

Isn't there a cartridge that takes SD cards with ROMs?

There is, but I like owning physical carts.

IDEA

How about buying a cheap sd card with low storage, place it in one of these carts, then paint the cartridge black. I could try making a label for it if you want.

does s&K work with the sonic classics 3-in-1 versions of 1 and 2?

Nope.

On its own, it's the closest thing to a Sonic 4 that we ever got. In reality, it is the 2nd half of Sonic 3. Sonic 3 was originally planned to include what became Sonic & Knuckles, but Sega demanded the game be released before it was truly completed. Which is why Sonic 3 ends rather abruptly in the 6th stage.

If your a sonic/sega fan, then yes. It is worthwhile on its own, and by adding extras to 2 & 3

I think it does the same thing as Sonic 1. It lets you play any blue sphere stage. No Knuckles in Sonic 2.

If you can get it cheap, S&K is worth it.

I honestly feel like Sonic 3 solo is better than the "complete" package, but that's just me.

really? so the version of sonic 2 on the compilation is inferior in this regard? bummer. i just bought sonic 3 and knuckles 5 minutes ago. Was looking forward to getting my Knuckles on.

I liked Sonic & Knuckles alot more than Sonic 3, but putting the two games together is like making sweet, sweet love to a beautiful woman (give or take).

Ok ok I'm convinced! Hate to say it but the sonic games got kinda wonky there and I wasant sure when it started.

Anybody know if it has issues on clone systems?

They started getting wonky with Sonic CD. I can't stand the game, although to be fair I only ever played it on my Android. But the true 16 bit Sonics (1, 2, 3 + Knuckles) are fabulous, and 3 + Knuckles is my favorite Genesis game by far.

I honestly feel like Sonic 3 solo is better than the "complete" package, but that's just me.I actually agree with this. I really liked S&K growing up, but playing it again it doesn't really seem as good as it's cracked up to be. It seems like for everything S&K does, S3 already did it better. When locked on it just makes the game unnecessarily long for my tastes. I would still say it's worth it if you don't have it though.

Anybody know if it has issues on clone systems?Depends on the clone. Most of them shouldn't have a problem with it, though I couldn't get the lock-on to work with my GenMobile for some reason (which ironically has the game by itself built-in like most of the AtGames models).

Buy it. The best Sonic 3 and Knuckles levels are in that half. It doesn't force you to choose one way to play, Sonic 3 stores saves for the combined version separately from the Sonic 3 only saves so you can keep both.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that its the only way to get the seizure inducing Hyper Sonic/Knuckles. (....and Tails with his animal-flickies things..whatever) :p Seriously that searing multicolored pulse is burned into my retina at this point.

It's definitely worth it with how cheap you can get it now, I see little reason why you wouldn't unless the ten dollar ebay purchase is really going to break your wallet. Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles together is really the complete version of Sonic 3 and IMO one of the best sonic games overall. It combined is longest of the classic games and has a pretty large number of hidden paths and alternate routes for both characters lines through the stage. Separate I feel that each game is a little meh just based on there relative shortness of each campaigns compared to Sonic 2 but together they are definitively one of my favorite Sonic games.

Like the others have said you should pick this up just based on ease of acquisition, price, and how much it adds to both games.

The only thing I didn't like about "lock-on" was how it overrode the Sonic 3 Boss music with the Sonic & Knuckles boss theme, I loved that "HEY COME ON!!" as a kid. lol

Don't forget that Lava Reef is by far the largest zone in the 16-bit series. It takes Knuckles more than a minute to climb from the Act 2 start to top of the level and several seconds to fall back down. An entire act in the previous games can be completed in a fraction of that time yet most of them here will take 5+ minutes even with Hyper Sonic being able to skip large parts some of them with.

I'm hoping in works on the retrogen adapter! I'm gonna try that on my retro duo then put sonic & knuckles on it then sonic 2 and 3 on top of it all!!!

If that's not a homage to the sega way of thinking I don't know what is!

Sonic and knuckles is worth the investment and if you have Sonic 1, 2, and 3 (especially 3), you'll have a great time on your Genesis <3

Buy it definitely! It doesn't add that much to Sonic 2, but with 3 locked on it becomes the best Sonic game ever made! Sonic 3 without S&K isn't that good, but when you put the two together it really is one of the best 16-bit sidescrollers ever. It's an absolute must have for any Genesis owner.

I disagree with this. If Sega can keep up the momentum it's been building with Sonic games recently, they may actually be able to top it.

Like some have already said. Sonic 3 and S&K was one game.

It really is Sonic 3 part 1 and Sonic 3 part 2(S&K). The game had a long development time so they chopped it in half and released them separately to keep the Sonic steam rolling.

So if you enjoy Sonic 3, then yes, pick it up so you can have the full version of the game.

You forgot to put the Game Genie in first, underneath Sonic & Knuckles.

If you have a Gamecube, a backwards compatible Wii, a PS2 or a backwards compatible PS3 you can do the Sonic & Knuckles 2&3 add-ons in the Sonic Mega Collection/Mega Collection +. You need to unlock them but it's not hard.

That game only costs about $10 used and it has a bunch of other good games on it.

I have yet to play a modern sonic genesis collection that didn't have some major sound issues with emulation at the very least. I'm not saying that this is the same or that this collection will be poor but I usually find that they are compared to the original copy.

Yeah they never get the spin dash sound right, even in Sonic Generations it's still wrong when you play the included Sonic 1.

ABSOLUTELY worth it for this! It also lets you become Hyper Sonic/Knuckles and Super Tails when you get all of the super emeralds. Plus, you can go back and re-play specific stages on a whim, and become super/hyper on the first levels of Sonic 3 if you feel so inclined. :)
S3&K was one of my favorite genny games growing up, and I was immensely disappointed the "lock-on" versions of these games were left out of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

From experience I would say the first modern generation collection that came out - Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube, is the only one I believe has even gotten close.
