View Full Version : What's the name of this early 90's PC game

I've been trying to figure out the name of a game for quite a long time. Maybe you can help me out. Here's what I remember about it.
I believe it was out roughly around 1990 - 1995.
From what I remember, it was first person view. But it wasn't a shoot em up. You actually had to think and figure out puzzles to progress.
I think it started out in a cemetery, and you get attacked by zombies.
Then later, you go inside a pyramid. You have to walk along the hallways of this egyptian pyramid, and figure out how to get past traps like falling into pit or spiked walls. And I think there are mummies that come after you down there.
That's as much as I can remember. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

This thread probably belongs in the Classic Computer forum (you'd probably have more luck, too), but I'll take a stab:

First off, it's almost certainly a DOS game, which means you might be able to find it on one of the good Abandonware sites. There were loads of these produced...tons of freeware / shareware games - I played a bunch and so have a lot of other people, and most of them were so generically similar that it's hard to tell which one it is, specifically, based on your description. Here's an abandonware that has a list of 3D FPS games, which it sounds like you're describing:

http://www.dosgames.com/g_3d.php

Some of the games that might possibly fit the bill, although I'm not sure:
Ken's Labyrinth (http://www.advsys.net/ken/klab.htm)
Catacomb Abyss (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lvkf0VpFkzY) (it looks like it starts out in the "towne cemetary" from the linked video - this might be what you want)
Nitemare 3D (http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Nitemare-3D.html)

That list of games I posted first has descriptions of the games...if it's not one of these, maybe one of the other descriptions will jog your memory.

The graphics look more similar to Kings Quest VIII than any of the others. Still, that's not it. I don't remember any time where you actually saw your character. Maybe using wolfenstein wasn't the best example, because the graphics were better than that. Definitely closer to the Kings Quest VIII look.

KQ8 did have a first person view you could toggle on and off. I couldn't find any screenshots of the first person view, but below is a shot from inside one of the pyramids in case it might be the game and it jogs your memory. It feels to me that KQ8 fits your description really well, unless you remember the game being really fun....then it doesn't.

It's not Kings Quest 8. Though the graphics looked sort of similar to that. Again, I don't think you see your character ever.

Also, its not a game that has guns I don't think. You might get a knife, or a spear, but no gun.

I would say Exhumed/PowerSlave, but that's a later release...

That's not a bad guess, the underground pyramid I think was kind of like that. But no, still not it. You walk around much slower than that from what I remember. And it's not Doom like. It's more like you have to stop and think about where you walk before you go anywhere. You might have to like light a torch, or do something to progress. I remember specifically, you're down in the labyrinth of this egyptian looking underground pyramid or something. And you are slowly walking around so that you don't fall down some pit.

I believe earlier in the game there's a graveyard you're walking through. And you might have a spear as a weapon. (bare with me, I'm going off a 20 year old memory)

Also, if I had to pick a genre for the game, I guess it'd be like a horror adventure/ strategy

This game SORT OF reminds me of it. Where you're walking around with the knife in the air.

But again, that's not it. Something close to that.

Nope, but another good guess. I think it would have been a few years earlier possibly.

OK, so a couple of clarifying questions:

-Did you have a full range of view, or was the 3D locked into cardinal directions - you could face N / S / E / W, but not turn in a 360-degree circle?

-Approximately what resolution were the graphics?

-How big was the user-interface or HUD - how much of the screen did it take up? Any idea what you could do with it, or tell about the game situation from it?

-Did you have a health bar at all?

I was going to say Montezuma's Return as well.

Oh! Waxworks? Gotta be Waxworks.

Waxworks! That is it! Wow, I really never thought I'd find the game again. Thanks.
