i cant find a date for this offer though... but it was in the pre-sonic era of the genesis

That wasn't for master system owners to upgrade, it was just a bonus if you bought a genesis during that promotion, if I'm seeing the commercial correctly.

Since they say summer, it had to be summer of 90, as genesis didn't come out until late summer 89, and Sonic was out in early summer of 91

true, there was no master system ownership requirement to get the free power base convertor, but the aim of the promotion was clearly for master systems owners to upgrade.
