Ive been thinking about this game a lot lately. I know it was not as popular as Mario or Sonic but everyone I know who had a genesis owned and loved the game. Kinda leaves me wondering why a sequel wasant made?
I myself never beat the game originally without use of the final boss cheat. That is a goal I've set for myself as soon as mine comes in.

Yeah, this game was somewhat popular from what I remember. Obviously not "Sonic" popular, but as a fun side scroller with attitude, I suspect it was a go to product for many. My cousin owned it, I owned it, and I think a friend of mine did too. It's not parodied often or even spoken of, but in it's day, it had it's fans. My guess is that most people have just forgotten about it because of it's failure to launch a franchise.

It's also one of the few dozen Genesis games I owned as a kid back in the early 90s. As the OP said, I had it and everyone I knew with a Genesis had it. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to assume it was a success.

I have never played the game, but always wanted to and remember seeing the box on the shelf every time we went to the video store.
Retro Gamer ran a "Making Of" article on the game a few issues back (#96). The guy that was in charge designed most of the bosses for the game. He enjoyed designing them so much he wanted to do some sort of Boss Rush gameplay mode for the sequel, but Sega moved everyone onto other higher priority projects as soon as the game was finished.
I need to track a copy of this game down.
