Snagged a perfectly working sega nomad.

I finally managed to snag a fully working nomad and am happy that the screen didn't get broken while being shipped.I am aiming at getting the battery pack for it as well.How long does the nomad battery last?

Congratulations, it really is quite the awesome system, no modern clone can compare. I really don't think of it as portable, the battery life isn't too great, especially with brightness up. I like to think of it as self-contained.

I've seen people install brand new screens into it, and they look pretty cool, but I would not attempt this without knowing how to do it.

Right on ! I had one way back when... I seem to remember it ate battery's pretty quickly.

Yeah i have seen other people who have replaced the regular screen with an led backlit one and they say it's quite better.I still have one other but it has a cracked screen.

New screen is definitely the way to go. The difference is really almost indescribable (to the point which it can be described as "a lot better" :p) but it really is something you have to see in person to notice how big of a difference it really makes. Bright colors, Better contrast, no motion blur, and because of advancements in screen technology (or something) since the Middle 1990's when the Nomad was released, battery life is better with the new screen. I can't tell you a definitive number since I haven't gotten all scientific with a multimeter or anything but it is, at the very least, noticeable. There is also battery pack mods using camcorder cells and/or lipo's but I personally haven't done that mod enough to have any useful information about that.

I noticed an additional 30-45 minutes of battery life with the new screen. I was originally getting about 45 minutes max on a fresh set of batteries. The rechargeable battery packs that some of the Nomads have by now are surely dead. If they still hold a charge I would be surprised.

I would just get the highest mA battery you can find that's rechargeable, that's the best you are going to do without spending a lot of money on batteries.

The new screen is a dream. I mean, it's nothing out of this world and it's like every other modern LCD screen out there, but the difference between new and old is astonishing.

I had Jonjandran mod mine, he's a member here. It was a bit spendy but I am the original owner of mine (paid close to 250 if I remember) so I fealt that it was worth it.

Corrected that for you. Think of mAh(milliAmp-hour, not milliAmp per hour) as the size of a gas tank. You don't get more current or power...a higher number just means it will last longer.

But yeah, get the highest mAh NiMh AA's you can find and you should be good to go. Or just use an adapter since it will still drain through them fairly quickly.

I agree, a new screen is the way to go. I sold mine, which was complete, before I knew there were replacements. I wish I had kept it. As for battery life. Mine wasn't too bad using lithium AAs. It would be even better with the new screen.

How long does the nomad battery last?
Approximately ten minutes, maybe a bit less if you actually start pushing buttons.

I still think the best use of a Nomad is trading it off for some AVE protos :vamp:
