NES: Gradius

For a while I was going for high scores, until I saw that pro players get into the millions. I can't break 200k, not on the arcade version, not on the NES version. Lately I've been trying to

SNES: Secret of Mana

Been playing through this with my girlfriend - such an epic game to play multiplayer, as mentioned in the other thread.

N64: Robotron 64

I only recently learned about this game. I spent 4 hours with a friend playing through it (his first time playing it, my second time after an initial test run). Even on insane it's a bit too easy until you get to the first boss. Still fun, though.

GameCube: Metroid Prime

I haven't touched it in a while, but I really need to get back on it.

Saturn: empty

Why are Saturn games so expensive?

Genesis: Sonic 3 + Knuckles

This game needs no introduction. I play this game (since really it's only 1 game) to completion once a year.

Xbox: Fable: Lost Chapters

Never played Lost Chapters before, so it's interesting to see the differences. Still a fun ARPG, but not as fun the third or fourth time going through it. Trying new things, whatever I can in fact try.

PlayStation: Final Fantasy IX

Fie on those who think VII is the superior game. FFIX is where it's at, although perhaps I'm biased since Final Fantasy II (aka IV) was my first real turn-based RPG, and this has so many allusions to the classics.

PlayStation 2: Capcom Classics Collection vol. 1

Shmuppin' it up with Capcom Classics. Is anyone else oddly compelled to ExedExes?

Game Boy Color: Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Hours

Just started this - missed the two Oracle games when they came out, so now I'm getting into them now.

Game Gear: Sonic 2

I need more Game Gear games. :/

SNES: Donkey Kong Country (Just starting)

I'm playing through them both with my girlfriend :) I'd forgotten how unforgiving some of the levels in DKC can be! ...particularly the ones with the spinning barrels and bobbing hornets. Such narrow timing windows!

360 - Nier - Bad ass action-RPG that everyone should play
DS Lite - Dragon Quest VI - as awesome as all of the DQ remakes, tho I'll be glad to finish it and move onto something else since I've been playing nothing but DQ games for the past year or so.
NES - Super Mario Bros - my two year old son loves this game, tho he insists I play it for him.
CDX - Pier Solar - Dunno when I'll get back to this one. It was actually starting to get good for awhile...

I don't think any of the other systems have games in them or, if they do, I don't know what games they'd be.

I'm taking this as a literal question of what's physically in our game systems, rather than what games are in our current game rotation. With that said:

Super Mario World is in my Retron3
Fantasy Zone: the Maze is also in my Retron3 (in the Genesis slot with a Master Mega Converter)
Pokémon Puzzle League is in my Nintendo 64
Golden Axe Warrior in my SEGA Master System
Chakan is in my JVC X'Eye
Last Alert is in my PC Engine Duo RX
Blazing Lazers is in my Turdo Duo
Outrun 2006 is in my XBOX
CAPCOM Classics Collection: Remixed is in my PSP and is completely unplayable because of the HORRIBLE 1000 series anti-D-pad
Trauma Center: Under the Knife / Retro Game Challenge / Pokémon Trozei are in my DSlite (with a Memorex Universal Game Selector)

TurboGenesis
03-07-2012, 03:05 AM
Atari 5200: Dig Dug
Atari 7800: Xevious
Colecovision: Frenzy
Vectrex: Star Castle
Atari XEGS: Donkey Kong
NES: Pin•Bot
Sega Master System: The Ninja
Sega Genesis: Wardner
Turbo Grafx-16: Space Harrier
Atari Jaguar: Pinball Fantasies
Sega Saturn (USA): Sega Ages (with mission stick plugged in)
Sega Saturn (Japan): Hyper Duel
Sega Dreamcast: Mars Matrix
PlayStation 2: Ridge Racer V
Xbox 360 (Japan): DoDonPachi Dai-Oh-Jou Black Label Extra

all my other consoles are empty at the present moment...

Yep, that's exactly what I meant. Otherwise I could have mentioned that Golden Axe Warrior is in my Master System rotation (I only the Power Base Converter add-on, so not technically a system for my reckoning) but I thought this way would be simpler.

What is your source for this, sloan? If this is indeed the case, would keeping the system with the game in the slot in a temperature controlled environment minimize this risk?

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the electrolyte in this case?

"Galvanic corrosion is an electrochemical process in which one metal corrodes preferentially to another when both metals are in electrical contact and immersed in an electrolyte."

I would think that if moisture was not in the equation to act as an electrolyte then it wouldn't really be an issue, but I know very little about this subject area so my "hunches" aren't worth all that much.

Moisture in the air, spittle, etc...

The metals between a cart and a system are not going to be that dissimilar but they are not going to be exactly the same either so the corrosion is going to very slow. Placing two dissimilar metals together in the presence of an electrolyte essentially creates a battery. In this case an extremely weak battery, but an extremely small amount of current can still flow causing corrosion to build up over time. Is it something to actually worry about? Probably not, as long as you don't leave it in there for years at a time. Don't take my word on that though since I haven't done the research on game system type connectors. It is, however, one of the reasons that computer connectors meant to be plugged in for a long time and high end electronics use gold or gold plated terminals, the gold resists corrosion much better than other metals.

This article explains moisture acting as an electrolyte as well...

My Nes TV - a 63 in 1 Supervision multi. It has a few of my favorites that never made it to the US NES - Twinbee, Exterion, Pooyan, Battle City.
Sega Master - Rambo: First Blood Part Two - This is the first game my parents let me pick out at the store. It still holds special memories and is a pretty damn good game, too.
GameCube - Muppets Party Cruise - This one is my wife's favortie and is a pretty fun game to play with friends.
Turbografx-16 - Blazing Lazers - Probably my favorite game of all time.
Sega Genesis - Truxton - Another great SHMUP.
Xbox 360 Elite - MW3
PS2 - Godhand

jb143 did good job of explaining, but I will add my limited understanding of electrolysis and oxidation. If oxygen is present, then any two conductive objects in contact with each other are actively engaged in the process of electrolysis and are essentially a live battery. This process involves the swapping of charged atomic ions and the pitting of the two surfaces. If not for electrolysis, then there would be no need to paint cars or nickel plate nuts and bolts. So, whenever you leave a game cartridge plugged into your console, the cartridge and console pin connectors are being degraded by electrolysis and oxidation, plain and simple.

I hope that clarifies.

I haven't have any issue with leaving cartridges in my consoles in the past 20+ years… *shrug*
my Turbo Grafx 16 has had a hucard with in it pretty much since I had it in 1990… there was a Ninja Spirit game in it, while it sat, unused from 1994-2010… I put it (and the CD player back into use as my Turbo Duo has lost sound…

my Atari Jaguar always has a game in its slot as there is no dust protection… actually, the CD unit stays inserted in the cart slot, and I keep a game in the cart slot on the CD unit at all times… the same case for my 5200… there is no dust protection so a game will always be with in it… these old consoles seem to have hold up well for my in a period of many years …

NES: Ninja Gaiden 2
Genesis: Mortal Kombat
TG16: Keith Courage
SNES: Super Game Boy - Konami GB Collection Vol. 3
Jaguar: AVP
N64: Goldeneye
NGPC: Card Fighters Clash (SNK version)
GBA SP: Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge

The rest are empty, although I do typically leave the last cartridge inserted as insurance against dust. I'd never considered the possibility of galvanic corrosion, but I live in a really dry area and dust/dirty contacts are more of a concern.

I don't think anyone can make a blanket statement in this regard either. I mean, we ALL* know that cart and system contacts need a good cleaning from time to time. Sometimes maybe just for dust, but other times for light oxidation or corrosion. Who's to say what caused it? And most of the time we don't even care what exactly we're cleaning off as long as it works afterwards. So maybe it HAS happened to a lot of people.

I'm not saying that leaving a cart in a system will defiantly lead to corrosion...but it is a know fact that 2 metals in contact with one another in the proper circumstances can do so.

*Disclaimer to remove possible irony. I am using "ALL" as hyperbole since I'm sure there are some kiddies out there that do not know this. ;)

I'd agree only this is true for rca contacts when plugged in to the back of your tv (or wherever.) The quality of the signal deteriorates over time because the electrons eventually bleed from one metal to the other... think of it like a pack of hungry boars separated from a field of grass by a weak-- fabric that will withstand all tension unless the boars dissolve themselves into smaller and smaller pieces until they can fit through the fabric. This process will take an indefinite amount of time given the environment and will have a definable or undefinable effect on the transfer of a signal through the two metals.

It's not one of the cheaper NES games -- I think I paid $15 cart only -- but it is pretty good. It's fairly unique, in that it's got a topdown, random-battles worldmap (with single-screen but Zelda-esque action-RPG battles), and average JRPG towns, but once you get into the dungeons, it changes perspective and you fight the enemies there, no separate battle screens or invisible enemies.

Oh, and the US cover and beginning don't give you much of a hint of this, though the Japanese cover does, but your character is a female knight.

How much better, if at all, with 3D?
Quite a bit, I'd say; it's easier to line up your shots with 3d, as you'd expect. The handy targeting mark, that tells you when you're lined up with enemies, is a help in either 2d or 3d, of course, but it's definitely easier in 3d than 2d. There's a nice 3d effect in the enemy base areas, too.
