I'm making a new channel on youtube and for a part of the intro video, I'm looking for the most intense explosion scene. I know Contra had some good ones but I would like to check with you guys...

What is the biggest most bad ass intense explosion scene you remember in the 2D games? Preferably 16 bits and higher.

At 12:50 in this video there's a sample of the kind of thing I'm looking for, but I think the colors are a little too desaturated and also it's vertical screen... I'm sure there are better ones out there, right?

Hmm... From what I can recall, Konami's 16-bit games often had ridiculously excessive explosions. Contra 3, Contra Hard Corps and Rocket Knight Adventures all come to mind as front-runners. Megaman X2 also comes to mind (when you kill a boss they explode for like, 10 full seconds before blowing up completely), and Gunstar Heroes also had a ton of explosions, but I don't think they quite matched the other games I mentioned.
Good luck!

This is WAY older than 16-bit but still definitely one of the most awesome video game explosions ever - Space Fortress for Bally Astrocade!

Head to about 6:45 to see the massive 8-bit destruction. If you have time definitely watch the whole video, done by one of my favorite Youtubers.

Brave Battle Saga Legend of the Magic Warrior, the Genesis pirate RPG has an EPIC explosion when you cast the fire summon (forget his name now, I think it was Balrog). Don't have a video now, but here's a pic:

I can think of some big explosions but they're not exactly visually intense.

Super Metroid - the space colony self destructing at the end of the intro stage

Final Fantasy III (SNES) - I won't go into too much detail here but it's an important part of the main plot

Star Fox (SNES) - the mothership explosion at the end of the Space Armada stage.

I think the ending one-ups this one pretty easily.

I used to base how awesome a game was and it's graphics by the explosions.

Ahh right, forgot bout that, and to think I just finished this game for the first time six months ago.

OK if NES is mentioned, I mention VCS Star Wars: Death Star Battle

Although certainly not as big as some of the others, I love the explosion from Porky's for the 2600/Atari 8-bit. Here's a clip. Just forward to 0:33.

Like, didn't it have explosions for practically the entire game?

Me and my friend were like "damn, if it really happened that way, Castro wouldn't have an island LEFT to dictate." :P
