IMO this game is complete crap. The characters are some of the worst I've ever seen in any RPG, the game is so linear it's basically a walk down a really long tunnel (for fuck's sake there aren't even any towns), you constantly get level capped, so you can't even stray from the main plot for a while to enjoy some grinding, the music is absolutely horrendous and is so inappropriate in light of the ingame environments that it seriously feels like a someone played a joke when selecting it and Square never caught on. Then there are all the problems with the player's party AI, the general battle system, and the disappointing magic. Bottom line, IMO it fails in every way that a game can fail, except for graphics which are great.
HOWEVER
They made a 13-2, which means this turd must have sold well enough to warrant a sequel. All the mainstream game review sites like IGN gave that thing high scores too. However, anyone I ever talked to about it, hated this game.
SO
WTF is going on? Do people actually like that monstrosity?

Final Fantasy hasn't been Final Fantasy for a long time.

This may not be the right thread for it but what the hell is it with Final Fantasy Titles? I mean, Final Fantasy XI-2, XII-2, Why not just give them all unique names?

Word.. the original Final Fantasy should have been named 'First Fantasy', IMO. How can something be 'Final' 14 freaking times? LOL

I mean, Final Fantasy XI-2, XII-2, Why not just give them all unique names?Because Final Fantasy X-2 made perfect sense at the time, but more or less locked them into it. For what it's worth, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII got a unique title, but what's odder still is that it probably had the most to gain of all from a FF-2 naming scheme since it's the most popular Final Fantasy game (stateside anyway). I think it would have sold even better than it did if it were called Final Fantasy VII-2.
How can something be 'Final' 14 freaking times? LOLYou ever watch the show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? They give a "final answer" up to 10 or more times, depending on the region.

I enjoyed it, but it was one of the FF titles that I traded in a few months after playing rather then keep it around.
The game doesn't have enough to do to warrant repeat playthroughs and in order to get to the part where you can branch off takes way too long to really enjoy the game again. The only character I didn't like was Snow with most others being either tolerable or likable to varying degrees with my favorite definitely being Sazh. The character upgrade system was disappointment considering how it seemed to lead you on into something interesting only to be a largely linear path. I enjoyed the music (standard battle especially) and the graphics were pretty damn good. I thought the battle system and paradigm idea was fun with the caveat of not auto-attacking everything all the time. The story was basic and led itself to the linear design of the game, lack of tows, etc. so it all made sense at least, if not a bad decision anyways. In many ways the game felt like a modern take of Final Fantasy X's style, another play through once then trade in Final Fantasy.
The major failings for both X and XIII for me is that they lack a sense of adventure that I really can't define. In both titles I feel like I'm being led on and adventure rather then actually having one which is fun the first time you do it like watching a movie, but isn't so much fun when you watch that same movie again and again and again.

Well, its not as much the number like XII that bothers me (though that is getting old), its the sequel of a sequel thing that they do with the -2 which I think is silly.
It just kind of reminds you just how rehashed the games are.

It gets really good after about 12 hours in. That's right, you have to go through all that boring shit to get to the real game. Pretty stupid.

I'd say there are people who love Final Fantasy 13 because they weren't around when RPGs were actually good. No I'm not talking about PS2 which had its fair share of amazing RPGs that unfortunately didn't sell well unless they carried the name Final Fantasy or Pokemon. SMT Nocturne, Persona 3, etc, they sold well for not being Final Fantasy, but well? No.
Their standards for quality probably isn't very high because they haven't really played anything of quality. PS2 was when gaming actually got popular, while the Wii is now when it's actually cool to have played video games.

Last great FF games to me was FFXII.
13 sucks 13-2 sucks more.
Funny how the best JRPGs this gen are on Wii, Xenoblade quickly became an all time fave and easily the best JRPG this gen. The Last Story was also really good. Another one I loved was Fragile Dreams. Combat sucks but the story and exploring is great.
The best game Square put out this gen is the fantastic The World Ends With You. So dam original. Almost like the Squaresoft days.

Graphics that present a big leap from the previous generation really suck people in that haven't been exposed to something so high quality before and Squarenix has banked on this for several console generations. It worked for them on FF4, FF7, FF10, and FF13 with all of those games having huge a fanbase because for many it was their first FF game and outstanding graphics are what typically draw in non-RPG players.

I couldn't agree more, definitely in my top 5 action for Action RPGs and a real high point for the previous generation.

Great point. Nintendo has truly had some gems and has overall dominated the genre in creativity and old school mechanics. Definitely.

It's okay when viewed as a standalone title. Not the best thing in the world, but certainly not the worst. But as a Final Fantasy game, yeah it's pretty weak. The old format of the FF games peaked out during the PS1 era. Japanese gaming has now split into two camps--uber-experiemental (where FFXIII and Catherine are) and stuck in the early '90s (like Record of Agarest War, Cave shooters or Persona--not that there's anything wrong with that! Most of those games are great.)
As JRPG's go, I like Resonance of Fate better. People dissed that game, but at least it's challenging and unique. I gets a bit repetitive but I think it's a successful experiment in complex combat mechanics. You may like that better. It's less story-driven, as opposed to current FF games, which are all story and no game.
