View Full Version : What are some games that allow you to commit suicide?

I don't mean just jumping off of a platform to your death, using a bazooka against a wall, or letting someone just kill you, I mean games that actually have an option for suicide (not forced suicide like in cases of mind control, I mean elective). I'm also including games where your character(s) (but not NPC's) has to commit suicide to advance the story, even if it's through a cut scene.

Zillion - for the SEGA Master System lets you input a 'suicide code' into computer terminals which instantly kills your player (unless you use it in a secret room, in which case you get one of several messages).

Revenge of Shinobi - for Genesis, IIRC, has a Ninjustsu were you commit an explosive form of suppeku, sort of, and I believe it costs you a life.

What are some others?

Portal and Portal 2.

Portal 2 has at least two places where you can consciously end the game by killing yourself.

Curse of Monkey Island comes to mind, though he really just faked his death.

Mass Effect 2: Morinth
Samara flat out tells you her daughter will kill you if you sleep with her due to a glitch in the way an asari 'mates' with another. If you actually sleep with her (which is your full 100% choice to make), you die. Suicide by orgasm.

Samurai Shodown IV: Everyone.
Each character could perform a suicide at any time to end the match. It would award the opponent the win.

I figured that there would be more of this in modern games, but I honestly thought that I made this thread in the retro forum. I do that a lot; I really need to pay better attention. :|

I do feel like committing suicide when I play nearly anything on the N64.

But obvious answer to Badinsults

I think one of the first versions of leisure suit larry let you do that. hmm.... shadowgate lets you attack yourself. Does that count? You'll die.

GTAIII - suicide by cop

Most Worms games have a suicide option.

Lemmings?

Lots of early text adventures allow you to do just about anything including

>kill self
or
>kill self with knife
etc etc

I remember the first time I played Pacific Fighters for the PC online with a bunch of people. Was in a Japanese aircraft on a mission to attack an American fleet when a Corsair jumped me and started a massive fire before I could escape that was going to be the end of me after a minute or two.

Figuring since it was a sim, I aimed for the nearest ship.

Edit - Scribblenauts on the DS has at least a few such options. A flood or nuclear blast (even if you build a bomb shelter and enter it beforehand) seem to be an automatic death as far as I can tell.

I guess you could said the "I'm outta here!" death in Sonic CD qualifies but its a bit of a stretch.

Pretty much every game ever lets you willingly kill yourself. A better question would be 'what are some games that prevent you from committing suicide'?

Cornelius

I don't recall which game it was, maybe pac-man 2 on genesis(?), but through a series of deliberate choices you could make your character so depressed he kills himself. Now I can't remember if I did this, watched someone do it, or just read about it somewhere (in which case it might not even be real).

Arguably any game with a "give up" option.

How about the Adventures of LOLO games?

Did Solstice have a kill switch? A few NES games had the "hit select" kill but it's too early to think of many right now >.<

actually doesn't that gun thing you get in Bloodrayne 2 allow you to kill yourself if you just keep using it with out refilling it with others blood?

Yoshimitsu can impale himself on his sword in the Tekken games.

Braid pretty much revolves around the idea of never dying unless there is some ending twist or section I haven't gotten to yet.

I remember Postal had a key that was labelled something like, "F*ck This." Pressing it would make your character point his gun at his own head and shoot.

Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi

When playing as Chioutzu. The move is called "Goodbye Mr. Tien" and recreates the time when he blew himself up to try and destroy Nappa but failed.

There is also the move "self destruct" in Pokemon.

Shadowgate for the NES. You can end your life through self immolation and seppuku (Actually, you stab the sword/arrow through your chest). There might be more but I ain't watching the entire video:

Evokers in Persona 3 might interest you. You don't die from it in the game, but you do blast yourself in the head with a gun.

Epicness right here! (skip ahead to 0:50)

Sho Shinjo and the Replicant have a move where they can kill themselves with their own swords in the Toshinden games.

The ol' DOS Apogee game, Boppin', stood out slightly for its gruesome suicide scenes, though technically those popped up when you ran out of lives. Then again, ending your lives instantly was a fairly trivial matter.

Pretty much any Pokemon game has that, also a fair number of hentai rpgs have it pretty much integrated into the plot, an example would be Monster Girl Quest. (Warning: X-Rated doujin game)

Hi no Tori (aka Phoenix or Firebird) for Famicom.
Probably because the game has an invisibility power-up that will let you get stuck in walls, or you can fall in narrow pits that are too high to jump out of (and though your character has the ability to magically make blocks appear, he can't in narrow pits). Pretty bad and I expect better from a Konami game. :(

I remember reading about a suicide code for one of the Panzer Dragoon games. It apparently kills your dragon, and gives you an instant game over.

They'd punish you if you tried to enter the Konami code proper.

Yeah, Mortal Kombat Deception had suicide moves called hara-kiri's. That was the first game I thought of, and I'm surprised no one else brought it up.
