I'm currently playing Military Madness Neo Nectaris on my iPhone (Military Madness 2 on Android)
which was originally released in 1994 in Japan on the PC-Engine Duo ~ Super CD-ROM2.

iPhone version.

I really do hope for a Military Madness 3 (not another remake or port) for the Nintendo 3DS (or any platform actually).

Although that's probably never going to happen since Hudson Soft is dead ;_;

Anyway, do any of you guys (or girls) like the series?

Hell yeah. I loved the original Military Madness on the Turbografx-16. I also have the new version, Military Madness: Nectaris, on the Wii, which I am considerably less fond of. As far as Hudson Soft's death being an impediment in there ever being a third installment in the series, I wouldn't be too certain. Perhaps Konami, who owns the all of the IP of Hudson Soft as well as the brand, will decide to do something with the game in the future. Honestly, I wouldn't be too psyched about another sequel unless the game has neo-retro graphics. To hell with the 3D graphics.

Military Madness is a cool series. Another very similar game also made by Hudson Soft is Earthlight and Earthlight 2 Lunar Strike for the Super Famicom.

Yeah I agree, I would want retro-sprite like graphics if Nectaris/MM ever gets made for any platform again. Like Advance Wars: Duel Strike, but better.

The original was amazing! My dad and I played this for hours when I was a kid.

I played the ever-living s*** out of the original TurboGrafx-16 HuCard in 1990 with my brother, along with Herzog Zwei.

We loved both of those games equally.

Military Madness was made by Hudson Soft?

And a better question would be: is there any way you could not enjoy Military Madness unless you've simply never played them?

True, and this is the best site on the internet about the series: http://nectaris.tg-16.com/

YES! I LOVE Military Madness.. one of my all time favorite games.

That being said a lot of the newer ports of Nectaris, etc. on Xbox Live leave me out in the cold a little. While the gameplay is all there, the visuals (especially the "3D" ones) are often less than engaging. Also the music I think, took a big step down. It made me realize a lot of the feel and appeal of the TG16 version was the distinctive tunes on it, which have kind of been lost.

I really, truly hope that the series continues under Konami....

I won't get a 3DS until either Nectaris or Advance Wars comes out for it.

I love the original. When I finally got it last year, I played it non-stop. I even wrote a review in Gamefaqs and a appreciation thread in the PCEngineFx forums:

"This story starts way back in 2002. Recently having discovered emulators, I started trying all those systems that as a child never had a chance to try. Of course, among them was the Turbografx. Only having notice of the system thanks to magazines at the time, I was pretty curious about it. I tried lots and lots of games, and stumbled upon Military Madness. Hey, this one seems cool! I started playing it, but lost 3-4 times at stage 4 (as you might have guessed, I was no genius in strategy games). Never played the game again.

Until this year. Having recently acquired a Turbografx, many people sweared Military Madness was one of the, not only best Turbografx games, but also one of the best strategy games ever. How could many people be wrong? Getting Military Madness was now my priority. I didn't have to wait too much, as a boxed one popped up in Ebay just two weeks later. I bought it without hesitate.

They weren't wrong. I started playing the game. Beat the first stages easily, and then, I arrived to stage 4. Would I be able to overcome that devilishly hard stage? Well, yes, I did. In my first try. Lots of units were described in the manual. I was overwhelmed at first, but, as I advanced stage through stage, I started knowing them, what they did, how would they attack/defend, and in which situations were they useful, or just a waste of a unit. I started to learn my enemy tactics, and to use the terrain to my advantage. I didn't have to care about ammo and gas for my units, which I found a positive aspect. I became addicted to the game, playing 2-3 stages every day. In a week, I was done.

But there were rumours that an advanced campaing, even harder than the last one, was ahead of me (I read it in Gamefaqs before playing, so it wasn't a big surprise). Wow, now the enemiy really outnumbered me! Strategy was more important than the last time, and a mere one unit could mean the difference between a big victory or a shameful defeat. Lots of battles were fought with the victory going back and forth between the Axis side and me, but they were all beaten, putting an end to their reign of terror.

And then, I found about that little password that let you play as the Axis side. Doesn't the replay value in this game ever end? Easier than the normal campagin, I still enjoyed it. Even easier was the advanced campaign, were you overpowered the Allied forces so much I started wondering how I was able to beat them in the campaing.

And then, after a month of playing almost every day, I beat the four different campaigns. All was said and done, or so I tought. Blazing Lazers, Legendary Axe and other games are waiting to be played. And the truth is that they are. But my mind keeps coming back to Military Madness and its masterful combination of strategy. So I start a new campaign and the cycle begins again...

I love this game."

The sequel, Neo Nectaris, is totally playable to non-Japanese speakers (there's only 4 commands and it basically plays the same as the original.) Totally worth getting, IMO.

BTW--the PS1 remake is also great. It looks fantastic and contains both the original TG-16 levels as well as some new ones. I made an old thread about it in 2004, but the link isn't working.

Great series, though.

Before Konami releases a sequel to the Military Madness sequel, I'd like to see a release of Neo Nectaris for the Wii's Virtual Console. I've got 900 Wii points for that any day of the week. ;)

I would respectfully disagree with that ^ I would much rather have a Military Madness 3 on 3DS (or any platform for that matter) than yet another re-release of Neo Nectaris, as much as I love the game, I want a true sequel more.

I have all of the console Nectaris games - probably my favorite is the PS1 release - IMHO easily the best value for a PS1 game in terms of being fun and offering a lot of play (and replay) time for the money. I also have the Japanese strategy guide lingering about somewhere and an old video game magazine (the title of which escapes me right now) that has a small spread on Military Madness.

Sorry, I was thinking of Android and iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. It wasn't re-released on a console and I know that's what you want. Hey, I'd love that too, but, I want a sequel more.

Hey! Can any other fans of Military Madness vouch for the iOS version of the game?

Edit:

Awww... screw it. I dove in and bought it. :D

I'm having so much fun playing the iPhone/iOS version. I just don't like how you cannot enter passwords to play any stage you want. I REALLY want the PCE SCD version now.

I love turn-based strategy in general, and would easily consider Military Madness somewhere in the top ten of ones I've played. I wouldn't mind owning a CIB copy one of these days, after I get done collecting for the Sega CD (which also has a decent hex-grid strategy game, Dark Wizard. It's not quite as good as Nectaris, but still, if you've got the hardware, give it a go).

Too bad most of the Nectaris series was only in Japan. I especially wouldn't mind having Nectaris GB (imagine being able to lead armies wherever I go).

You guys do know tha a new nectaris game was released on xbla/psn, right? It's pretty fun but I got to a level I believe to impossible. I don't think it was tested very well.

Oh yes, I used to own it before my 360 was stolen. It was a remake of the original game with the original maps.

It didn't contain anything from Neo Nectaris though.

Welp, I cleared all 48 maps in Neo Nectaris on the iPhone, advanced campaign. Not as hard as I remember on the TurboDuo.

So much fun, I'm doing it again.

On a side note, anyone into R-Type Tactics/Command ? I highly recommend it.

Yeah if you don't have a PSP you'll never play it. The game is worth every penny though.
