You know, when I look at this game and see what a great game it was, I often wonder where the sequel was? It sold really well on the N64 and was reviewed really well. One of the first actual games that caught my attention too. Even after all of this, I have to ask why in the Hell this was never released on the VC for the Wii even. Talk about wasted possibilities? Other than the fact that the game seems too dark at times, this is easily one of the ten must buy games for the US Nintendo 64 Any thoughts?

I think people just moved on to more 'evolved' shooters, like Quake II, Goldeneye, etc. that allow them to look up and down.
Doom is a great game, but at the time, I think it was seen as a bit of a relic.

Still could use a sequel, though, although at this point and time it's a bit late for one. Imagine what Doom could have done for the GameCube, or Wii?

Could have added the ability to look up and down in the sequel. They did it for DOOM 3 after all.

I think it was just a matter of Doom 64 not really being that great and, as mentioned, more mature FPS games were on the scene. Doom was old news in 1997 and Goldeneye was released the same year.

Well, Midway did publish a second id shooter on the N64, but it was the Quake port, not another new Doom game. And then after that Activision got the rights, and they did Quake II (which, of course, sort of like Doom 64, has all-new level maps).

It might have been cool to see another N64 Doom game, particularly with multiplayer (I know Hexen 64 has 4-player, but that's just Doom engine, not Doom itself), but yeah, more people were probably interested in Quake than Doom at that point.

Doom 64 was awesome. I bought it brand new at launch and it was high on my list of games to find when I got into game collecting. Love that game.

But it was never released on a Nintendo system, which is what I thought the point of this thread was.

Bah. Doom 64 was the REAL Doom 3.

I love Doom 64. Sure its essentially a separately-released, console-exclusive expansion pack, but its more of a game I love. The only thing I don't like are the graphics (way too dark--have to turn up the brightness on my TV to see) and the music, which tries more for ambience than kickass tunes. I'd rather have the latter. Not a huge fan of ambience.

I love Doom 64, but hate the N64 controller. Luckily, there's a pretty awesome GameCube to N64 adapter to address this issue, and DOom 64 allows you remap the controls as you see fit. It's pretty sweet.

Doom 64 is better than the console quakes. Also, the options have a brightness adjustment. Just sayin.

I haven't played the game in probably 15 years, but yea. If it was released 2 years earlier, maybe I would've found it to be a good game, but I recall the darkness and controls being frustrating. I don't think I have the cart in my N64 collection but maybe I'll revisit it in the future.

Wonderful game, and one that did not seem to get the respect it should have. I think that at the time of its release like others have said Goldeneye was all the talk. The N64 has some really good stuff and glad that is game has been remembered.

Maybe it just didn't sell well enough for a "kiddie" console?

By the way, there's definitely at least one mod available to allow the game to be played natively on the PC now.

I have to ask why in the Hell this was never released on the VC for the Wii even.Licensing issues, no doubt.

They do, but it doesn't work.

Actually, I'll admit, my TV may have something wrong with it--for most games, its default brightness and contrast are just right, but every once in awhile (and this tends to happen more often with more recent games) I'll need to crank up those values to be able to see. Even so though, I DID try adjusting Doom's brightness in-game before messing with my TV and as I said, I didn't notice much of an improvement.

Doom 64 is cool but the graphics are too damned dark even with lighting turned all the way up. They may have done this on purpose to hide the bluriness. Cool game. And ya they were dumb not to do a sequel anything Doom will sell well. Doom just always rocks, even the worst versions of doom are fun.

I would agree, but DOOM 64 was earlier in the consoles life than GoldenEye 007. Plus, what else was there at the time? Hexen? Blah. And sorry, I guess I'm in the minority here too, but I hated Turok. It was terrible. Just seems that DOOM was a more solid title.

Judging by the three sequels it got, I would say there were plenty of N64 owners that didn't hate Turok.
I would have been all over a sequel to Doom 64, personally, but then I would have loved a sequel to Disruptor as well.

Hexen 64's a good port, really, but it is just a port. That's probably the biggest issue, it's a port, and like all the console ports of Hexen, doesn't include the expansion pack either, even though I believe all three versions were released after the expansion was for PC. Huh. Also, the save file is far too large (though Turok 2's is just as big, and without Hexen 64's excuse of it being because the game has save anywhere; Turok 2 has save points, very far apart save points). But Hexen 64's not a bad game, if you like Hexen... and it does have four player multiplayer, as I said, while Doom 64 and Turok 1, two other 1997 N64 FPSes, were one player only (and Quake 1, the next year, only two player max. Goldeneye and 1998's Turok 2 were four player though too of course).

Despite that, I would put Doom 64 above Hexen 64, because it's all new, the new content is great, and the graphics engine is probably better. Both are good games though. As for Turok, Turok 1's a very good game. All of the N64 Turoks are great games, though. Turok 2's probably my least favorite of them because i find it too hard (it's quite ambitious, but so difficult, and I'm far from great at FPSes...), but it's a great series on the platform. Turok 3, on the other hand, is probably my favorite one of the four.

I wish someone had brought Hexen II to a home console. The Dreamcast would have been a good fit. It would have been nice if Hexen had gotten the same treatment on the N64 that doom did. That would have been awesome.
