I'll pick it up eventually its hard for me to play anything like that unless my son is a sleep.

He was ok with Resident Evil 5, but I'm sure Silent Hill would give him nightmares.

I'm a fan, but taking a bit of a break from the series. They're pumping out new entries a bit too regularly for me the past 5 years or so and I've fallen a bit behind. And with HD versions of Silent Hill 2 and 3 due out this week, I imagine it will be quite sometime before I give this entry a try.

yeah you guys should really give this game a shot whenever you can, this game is sort of a redemption for those who didnt find homecoming to be "silent hilly" enough lol

im on the fence about the hd collection tho, on the plus side they have new voice overs along with the original voice work so you can go back and forth, but on the negative side, have either of you seen the comparison videos of the originals to the hd version? jesus christ wtf did they do to silent hill 3? that shit looks like a disney movie, they pretty much crippled everything that gave that game atmosphere, no fog, no rust or dried blood on the floors, a flashlight that now seems to work like a spot light....konami....wtf son :(

The HD Collection is absolute crap.

Downpour on the other hand I found moderately enjoyable, which came as a shock to me. I've been a hardcore SH fan for quite sometime but ever since SH4, every game afterwards has managed to deter my loyalty to the series a bit. I wasn't impressed with the E3 (2010 I believe?) trailer for Downpour and was ready to give up on the series until I pre ordered it the remaining two weeks before release and found myself actually liking it to some extent. Devil's Pit... I could've done without. Also, the monster designs are a little uninspired, but it was still a decent game. It's a shame the HD Collection and Book of Memories are being released all during the same month to convolute the series furthermore and possibly overshadow Downpour.

yea i just beat downpour a few days ago and honestly thoroughly enjoyed it, i really only bought this because i had it reserved since last year when amazon had it at 50 dollars plus the 10 dollar credit preorder bonus basically brought my total investment to 40 dollars

i didnt know what to expect and even considered dropping my preorder due to how unenthused i really was but im glad i didnt, this game is the best in the series since 3 and i stand by my assertion, the monster designs as you said are pretty bland overall but i did really like the ghost dolls, i thought that was pretty novel, and there were alot of tense moments in the game that made me jump in my seat a little bit, story was kind of predictable but it was told pretty well, the real shame in this game is the constant frame rate drops, thats pretty much my only real complaint, that and the fact that this has probably the weakest other world in the series but its made up for by the good design in regular silent hill

i gave this game an 8 even tho i did get a wack ending but that was really my own fault, oh and if you just made it out of devils pit, you only have a little to go for the game to start picking up, it gets good around when you leave hillside, the side quests around this time and up are really well done, if you consider yourself a veteran silent hill fan you owe it to yourself to at least rent this game, it deserves to be played

Hm. I guess I'll have to check it out. Or, if you prefer... Czech it out. Am I right? HO!

I'm not far into in, but I did post this on the other DP fourm. :P

So my husband and I were at Bestbuy this week when we discovered that Downpour was A. Out and B. in 3D. Normally 3D wouldn't be a major selling point with me as I'm prone to visually stimulated motion sickness. But Paul was sold as he's been looking for something to play on his spiffy Smart Tv. Besides we both love Silent Hill.

We're currently something like 3 hours in and I'm loving it. The first two hours of the game play on rails, in what I surmise is suppose to be a sort of tutorial prologue. It works and packs in plenty of tension. After that though you (hopefully) pick up the town map and are dumped in a Residential sandbox. Which is nerve wracking at first because, you're in Silent Hill (duh!), you can't see across the street in the fog, and there's zombies galore.

Which raises a side issue, normally in every other Silent Hill I've played (so not counting Homecoming or anything on handheld) zombies were easy enough to bash to death. Thus they ceased to be threatening and consequently, scary. In this game the mother fuckers parry axe swings with their god damn arms and hit back- HARD. So unless cornered, it's in your best interest to just run like hell. I love it, keeps the game frantic and prevents me from becoming jaded too quickly. I loved Silent Hill 2, but for me, it stopped being frightening after the apartments.

Speaking of scary, there was one jarring moment when a, what I can only describe as a zombie juggernaut, dropped down from the ceiling. I screamed, Paul yelped, and the in game character Murphey dropped the f-bomb. Yes it was a cheap scare, but the immersion was fantastic.

Anyway, one complaint I have is that the puzzles can be way too obtuse. Granted I'm playing on hard but the clues they give me are occasionally not enough information for me to logically deduce squat. In stead I'm forced to resort to blind trial and error; Example, in the Police Headquarters you have to enter in car numbers to call off the zombie patrols from the streets. The only clue you're given is a chalk board with erased numbers. For three sequences this is doable as you're given the code minus one letter (four possibilities A-D) and one number (nine possibilities 1-9). It's time consuming, and the controls are clunky but with by systematically entering all codes you'll eventually get it right. One of the sequences, however, is missing 3 of the 4 digits. There's some math involved here, but lets just say that's a lot of possibilities. Go go GameFAQs.

The last point I wanted to address in this first impressions post, is that the 3D actually adds a lot of depth to the game. In 2D the screen can appeared cluttered and sometimes it becomes a pixel hunt to spot the items that are important. In 3D it's just a lot easier to see when weapons stand out against their background. I like that.
