So the other day I did something I've never done before: I purchased a brand-new sealed Playstation game.

What surprised me is that it's not silver - the data side is completely black. I've heard that people have had a lot of trouble with used, scratched Playstation discs, and that black CD-Rs are supposed to be more scratch resistant, but I've never heard of original, black Playstation CDs.

Is this a recent development? Or is it something only used by certain publishers?

Every single PSX game has had a black data side.

I own like 10 games, ranging from 1997 (originals) to the Greatest Hits series of the past couple years, to Final Fantasy Origins which I think is pretty recent.

Every single one has a black data side of the disc. So I'd have to go in accordance with the previous reply. That's the way the discs are.

Shiggity-bang, they're all black. Every one of them, not one release was made with a non-black data side. Bad timing for this question, eh?

Wow. Aren't I unobservant? I guess this must mean that black CDRs are not as scratch-resistant as I have been told.

Or maybe they are and people just treat their games like crap.

Or maybe I'm not wearing any pants, and all PSX games are black backed.

Or maybe the fact that you keep saying all of your games are on CDRs makes it so obvious everyone else here missed it. A real game isn't on a CDR, bro.

Did anyone notice something different about their copy of Skullmonkeys? Mine seems to have a BLUE-ish tinge to the normal black of the bottom of the CD.

Some do, I've noticed that too. Dunno about specific titles, though.

Eh? I never said all my games are on CDRs. I don't even own a PlayStation, and spend very little time with them in general. Previously, the only black CD media I was aware of were black (as opposed to gold, blue, etc.) CDRs.
