I've got a fami-clone bootleg system (looks like a PSX...sorta) works on channel 3.

Easiest thing to buy is an AV Famicom - it hooks up via RCA cables...
***UNTESTED RUMOR***
I've read that the original beige-and-red Famicom works on something like channel 79 on US TVs, but once again, I've not tested this myself, so I can't vouch for this information personally. But like mentioned by Racoon Lad, I also have a bootleg Fami + Keyboard in One that runs on Channel 3 as well as RCA cables, so maybe a bootleg Fami not be a bad thought as a backup if you buy an expensive Fami you can't use...

Any famicom pirate system (like the PSX of Racoon), works easily on an american TV...

I picked up an interesting thing at the Nintendo Garage Sale. It is a famicom that has been wired with NES controllers. I find it hard to believe that Nintendo would think about releasing the system with the grey NES controllers without having first designed the American NES, but I can't think of any other reason why they would have done such a thing. I should hook it up and test to see what channel it appears on. I've been told that early japanese systems appear on channel 98 or so, but I've yet to test that theory despite owning several famicoms and a PC engine.

Well, I know for a fact that the original white PC Engine works on an American tv set on channel 97. I used to use it like this until I got ahold of a Core Grafx and then used a/v.

My Famicom works fine on channel 96. I have one of the old white and red models, and aside from some minor interference (it's barely noticable) I have no problem running it.
