I'm probably going to get flamed to hell for asking this question, but here goes. I just recently packed up my precious 20GB PS3, as the thermostat was messed up and telling the fan the console was hotter than it really was, and therefore would run near full blast in a matter of minutes. Not really an issue when playing games, but for movies it was terrible.

I have no idea when I will purchase a new console. I'm thinking of waiting until this fall to wait and see if they do a holiday bundle of some kind. It could be next year before I get a new one. Who knows.

Basically the question is, can Sony do anything to my PSN account due to my not logging in for months on end? I want to say "no", as that would just be a huge lawsuit waiting to happen for someone else, but it does still bother me slightly.

I have a lot of PSN stuff, as well as several hundred gigs worth of media on my 20GB's 400GB HDD that I plan on transferring to my new console.

I don't think so. My regularly used PSN I've not logged on for three months at one time. My Japanese PSN I've probably logged on it once to download ad hoc party when it was originally released outside of the US, and then later to download the Yakuza Dead Souls demo and Black Panther Yakuza demo. Not sure how long that was but a fairly long time.

Due to current generation gaming being just a fraction of my gaming time, I've regularly had extended periods of inactivity while focusing on other areas of the hobby. Yet my PSN and XBL accounts have always been there waiting for me.

I wish.

Microsoft said they were going to start deleting Live accounts from the Xbox era that hadn't been used in years but so far they've done nothing of the sort. :(

PSN and modern Live accounts should be fine.

Thats actually not true. I know this because sometime in 2010 certain gametags on my friends list from the original xbox days started mysteriously disappearing one at a time. At first I thought it was random or maybe that person had finally come back and decided to close or change their account. But then it happened a few more times over the last few years and these were accounts where the people haven't been online for atleast a year and all of them from the original xbox days. So although this is the first I've heard of Microsoft making some sort of official announcement to delete older accounts I know for a fact that they have already started doing that awhile ago.

But more to the OP point, I don't think they(Microsoft or Sony) would do this for current 360 or PS3 accounts because this gen is still going on and will be for atleast another year and a half. And even after the new systems come out(rumored to be 2013) the current systems will most likely be still supported for another few years after that.

You should be safe - I bought a 360 when it was released and sold it shortly after due to high demand and not enough systems and made a small profit..bought another one a year and a half later and was able to log into my old account without a problem.

I'm pretty sure my PS3 sat unused from early 2010 until shortly after PSN came back up last year, and all was fine in PSN account land for me.
