Id like to speculate who would have the most powerful fucking thing on the market and who will have the most inferior hardware.

Sony or Microsoft. Definitely not Nintendo.

I fail to see the point of Nintendo as an option.

Since they are all getting their CPU's/GPU's from other company AMD/INTEL/etc. I would expect Microsoft and Sony to be running about the same horsepower. It has been suggested that both Microsoft and Sony may have the same GPU (or essentially the same). The Wii-U seems to be more of a mystery so far.

Personally I hope that all of the new consoles are very powerful. Maybe then PC owners can stop getting sub par ports because games have to be designed to be able to run on lesser powered consoles as well.

How long do you actually notice how great the graphics are anyways? Once I get into a game, it's all about the gameplay and such. I really couldn't care less about how powerful the next gen systems are.

I'm guessing it could be Sony but probably only by a small margin. At least especially if they are going to hold out longer than Microsoft to release theirs.

Yeah, and it will probably play out the same way it did for the PS3. Unless the next Playstation gets an equal share of the North American market early on, MS will end up as the lead platform again. I guess it could be different this time though, since Sony isn't going to use a bizarre CPU like the Cell.

That depends on the game. For a game that you can play at your own pace like Skyrim I'm still finding myself amazed with some of the views. (PC with high texture mods installed). However on most action games the game play is obviously more important.

When was the last time the most powerful hardware won a generation. Never. When was the last time the weaker hardware on. Always

That's true. Atari 2600 was weaker than almost all of its comptetion even within the same company, NES was weaker than SMS, Game Boy was weaker than Game Gear, Genesis and SNES were weaker than Neo Geo, 3DO and Jaguar, PS1 was weaker than N64, PS2 was slower than Xbox or Gamecube, Wii was weaker than Xbox 360 and PS3 and Nintendo DS was weaker than PSP. But the lesser powered system always seemed to come on top with only a slightly weaker system usually being sort of forgotton about.

I think what matters the most actually is who has the cheapest system. A lot of people always want something new to enjoy for the next 5-10 years and some people would rather just buy the one that is the cheapest but still has decent games.

The Phantom 2 or Indrema 2 for the win!

Playstation 1 won the fifth generation by a landslide actually.

Edit: N64 was not more powerful than PS1

Microsoft's efforts seem to be more on software and media experience. If Sony manages to get the best gaming performance, it will have to compete against Microsoft's slower but better rounded platform. They're probably going to have very different design philosophies.

The Emotion Engine's CPU was an ungodly powerful CPU for it's time, and it beat the crap out of both the Gekko and the Pentium III. It just had bottlenecking issues which limited it's full potential. The GameCube had it's fast as hell 1T-SRAM, not too mention it's GPU was directly linked to it's CPU for quicking processing. The Xbox had VRAM out the ass, but it's system RAM and VRAM were SLOW.

Wow, I just realized I forgot quite a bit about the sixth generation hardware. Then again, I did just wake up about half an hour ago....

It's sad that people are still lying to themselves by saying that graphics can't get any better, or that they're the only thing that more computational power can bring to a console.
Modern games are full of superfluous detail. The vast majority of what you see is non-interactive eye-candy that isn't even modelled in the physics of the game. It's all just smoke and mirrors. There is infinite room for improvement.

well sony pulled it off this time and I'm guessing they want to either hold off and let the ps3 continue a bit longer (which could give them more time to be more powerful) idk but I vote sega just for kicks haha

I've heard that the ps3 and 360 will use the same graphics in which case I'm not sure why they'd bother other than exclusives which will become far more important than ever before

Really I thought sony would go for having a weaker system and have better 3rd party support this time , and try to get their older ps2 style of doing busines having the most affordable console and biggest library of games.

Sweet I voted in the majority. Sony will definitely be more powerful, but i'd put money on it being the most expensive too

The problem is, if Sega released a new console, the energy consumption would be too great for most homes to handle. This is due to the amount of awesomness the new unit would contain.

I put in a vote for Sony.

Realistically speaking, I'm pretty sure Microsoft is more interested in having a more advanced Kinect with their next system, than having an amazing GPU. Which is unfortunate. They are likely to cheap out a bit on the CPU and GPU. The crazy thing about Sony, is if you consider all the money they have lost. The PS3 experience has really been a disaster for them. They went from No.1 marketshare to No.3 (in North America) in one console cycle. They had been dominating the world of Video Games since for a solid 10 years, and then things just went south. Most would say that Kutaragi's ambitions where just a bit out of control, and the $599 price was the kiss of death. It's funny, cause when you really think about it, Sony SHOULD be the least likely company to have the most powerful system next gen. I mean... it didn't work for them the last time. The least powerful system came in 1st, and the 2nd most powerful system came in 2nd. They had the Ferrari, and yet they still came in last. (again talking North America).

Sony can't help themselves. It's not in their blood. They will try to squeeze the most power into the machine as they can. Ultimately, I think they end up with a slightly more powerful system.
