I know there was a 3DS thread, but I couldn't find it. Anyways. Purchased the 3DS a couple of weeks ago when Target was selling it for $145. Buy two get one free games at both Target and Amazon, I picked up Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Tales of the Abyss, Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D, Resident Evil Revelations, and Dead or Alive Dimensions. The system has nothing else I'm interested in.
So just wanted to give my opinion after putting a good amount of time playing it.
Mario Kart 7 is easily the best game on the system, and while Mario Kart DS is better, Mario Kart 7 is still a great game. Online is good, but it has some flaws, such as when trying to go to the next race as there are times that the game will hang and just sit there endlessly. When you can get online though, it's a great experience. Kind of like how Twisted Metal is amazing when you can get online, except the difference between the two is that you can get a match far more often in Mario Kart 7 than Twisted Metal, so it's not that bad.
Super Mario 3D Land is decent, and then everything else is pretty eh. Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D is extremely responsive, but obviously, it's a mini game being sold as a full game, and gets very repetitive very quickly. One problem with Mercenaries and Revelations is that because of the low resolution of the 3DS and the fact that they want the games to be great looking graphically, the screen is zoomed up extremely close. Dead or Alive Dimensions doesn't seem to control as well as it does on any of the consoles, but that's more of a handheld issue than the game itself. Then Tales of the Abyss, while a good game, is the port of the PS2 game with a feature I don't use.
As for the system itself. I own the original fat DS and I thought the ergonomics of the system sucked, but it wasn't uncomfortable to play the system. The 3DS however just sucks to play for long periods of time, and by long periods of time, I'm speaking 30 minutes to an hour. The ergonomics of the system is just so bad that any game that I have to use the L and/or R button along with the rest starts giving me hand cramps. What is with Nintendo portables and shit ergonomics? They got it right with the GBA, then decided to fuck it up with the GBA SP, the DS(which was better than the SP,) and now the 3DS.
Then the Nintendo 3DS E Shop. All I have to say is that it's all around garbage.
I would have waited for the dual analog model, but I played Mario Kart 7 at a friends which is the only reason I picked up the 3DS. I purchased the other games only because they were games I was interested in and I got them at a deal. The fact that there's not much quality than Mario Kart 7 and the shitty ergonomics of the system makes it really not worth it at this time. The same could be said for the Vita, although, Uncharted, Wipeout 2048, and Unit 13 are good games, and the Vita has a great design.
