And I'm not talking about games like elder scrolls either, where your standing a foot from the enemy and swinging the biggest sword in the universe and missing. I'm talking about:
Hexen
Hexen II
MakenX for the Dreamcast (best use of lock on in FP game ever)
Rune
Condemned
and... and..... and that's all I can freaking think of DAMMNIT! Why aren't there more first person slashers? This is a horribly overlooked sub genre. We need a Halo quality action game, first person slasher with lots of melee weapons and limited projectiles. Ammo for projectile weapons could be really limited forcing the player to rely on sneak and melee attacks with a shield for blocking projectiles. Snipe shots and attacks around the shield still work like in real life though. It would be awesome. Does anyone else know of any other first person slashers that I missed? None of that Oblivion/elder scrolls stuff. I want to be able to hit what I'm fighting.

There's the 4 King's Field games, the 2 Shadow Tower games, and Eternal Ring.
Edit: Nevermind. I just watched a video of Elder Scrolls and the games I mentioned above seem to be more like that than Maken X and the Hexen games.

Theres Rise of Nightmares for Kinect. Actually Fruit Ninja Kinect could also be considered a first person slaher since thats all you actually do in that game is slash stuff.

It would be nice to have more variety in the FPS genre.
A new Maken game would be cool.
First-person platformers are pretty much extinct as well. There's Jumping Flash! and I suppose maybe Mirror's Edge, but that's about it.

I agree - great sub-genre generally overlooked - lets have hope that the Kickstart program will be utilized to bring this genre back to life!

I remember not being able to get into MakenX, but i'll have to give it another try. It was with the first dreamcast I ever bought.

I ran around Fallout 3 with a Power Fist for 2/3 of the game after someone randomly dropped it. Totally changed how I played the game.

Left 4 Dead 2 lets you go around the game with a melee weapon!

doom series with the chainsaw!
Doesn't Dead Island allow you to run around with a melee weapon?
and remember the old days when the Wolfenstien, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D sources were every where there was more Indie FPS's then you can shake a stick at! (i am talking mid to late 90s). I am sure there was a good deal of melee FPS action!

I don't know if you're only looking for old games, but there are two Red Steel games on the Wii. Both received positive reviews.

Indeed. I dismissed the melee weapons in both F3 and New Vegas because they just seemed too silly. My second playthrough of New Vegas however I went all melee and ended up playing like a complete psychopath but a very effective psychopath. I will say however that playing regular second and hardcore mode first in New Vegas completely colors the game differently and I really don't think you could be an effective melee character in NV hardcore.

Shien is cool, but I think it's more of a shooter. Never played Super Spy, and I don't own any of the new systems since I sold my Wii. I wouldn't mind playing fallout though, but it looks like it's pretty involved (big 'time' investment which is why I don't play much new stuff :( ). I think it would be cool if a game took MakenX's lock on controls to a new level and allowed you to lock onto an enemy and let you use the right stick to make precision attacks. Me and some friends of mine used to have a lot of fun playing Halo3 death matches with those big war hammers. Something like that would be cool also.

I enjoyed Crossed Swords in MAME. The sequel might be better.
