So I've been uploading gameplay footage for a long time on youtube and I recently thought I'd try doing video reviews or commentary about gaming stuff. I've also been blogging about gaming stuff for a few years on gamespot, so feel like I have some practice in talking about gaming stuff at least, but converting that to video commentary and reviews is something new for me.

For my first video review I picked a gba sp accessory because I saw there were few youtube videos or reviews of it and it seemed like a good choice for a first review since a game would be harder to review. I've always enjoyed posting gameplay of games that little people know about or that have very few videos on youtube, so in those situations I feel like putting up video reviews of those games would be helpful for people.

I already see some problems with my review though. I shot it all in one take, and realize I should have re-shot parts and done more editing to get rid of parts where I took too long moving to the next point. I tried winging the review sort of because I didn't want it sound super rehearsed. I wrote down a few points I wanted to mention beforehand, but didn't do a full script. I am thinking doing a script and loosely following it at least would be the better route to take in the future. I'd like to add more humor in eventually to my videos, but am trying to just get the basics down before I attempt more of that.

For the type of review I am hoping to make, I want them to be informative primarily, but funny or at least interesting. My inspiration is more stuff like Classic Game Room then the ranting, semi-forced rage of youtube reviewers like AVGN.

So yea, I'd appreciate any tips you have for making video reviews or what your opinions are about my first one.

*edit*

Haven't attempted a new review yet, but tried recording some Skype commentary while playing X-men Legend II: Rise of Apocalypse Online on the PS2. Thinking maybe might start uploading online co-op commentary regularly if people like this. Curious what you guys think:

There's a certain charm in the asymmetry of the shot and the random cords dangling just out of frame.

You have a pretty natural ease in your voice/delivery. If you have interesting things to say I could easily find myself listening to whatever that may be.

Also, your camera is clear, your lighting is good, and your microphone is at the right level, so, points for that.

There's not much to critique, but I didn't hate it. Points for the quality of the a/v and points for keeping it short and to the point.

I'd recommend taking a look at what Stuart Ashen does on his YouTube channel. That's a great example of what you can do with minimalism, a single camera shot with few cuts and reviews of odd-ball accessories/devices.

Hi, I think you have a wonderful voice and I believe you are extremely passionate about your hobby. Your camera seems to be of the approved variety and your hands have a gentle and smooth texture. My only critique would be to have prepared speech or a specific point so it would allow you to vocally flow better through the entirety of your video. Good Luck Sir in your continued youtube ventures.

I never would have imagined that there's a country with more disgusting Easter candy than we have in the US LOL!

I enjoyed it. I let it play out while I did some work on the computer. Pleasant and funny listening :)

Heh, think you watched the wrong video. I was a bit puzzled at first since you mentioned easter candy, but then realized you watched the link Frankie_Says_Relax posted lol.

LOL, yeah, looks like it. I added a helpful disclaimer so people don't get confused.

I thought the video was pretty cool. I like how you didn't try to ham it up to much. That's a pretty cool device too. I didn't know they even existed.

I wouldn't mind seeing some reviews.

The minute of crazed white noise after you pulled the cartridge out is kind of uncalled for as well. Not so bad otherwise.

The video review is good. Don't sweat it.

Yea heh, sorry about that white noise, didnt notice it until it was uploaded. It's obvious to me now I need to do some editing before I upload a video review in the future.
