Hey guys, just wondering if anyone owns a Development Kit for any system? Can they be found in the wild?

I have one for the Atari 7800. I didn't get it in the wild though. It would be pretty unlikely to find something like that in the wild but anything is possible.

I've got a 64DD dev kit. Got it on eBay about 7 years ago for 200 bucks. It's brand new :)

I had one for the original xbox but I sold it off. I picked it up for $25 at the swap meet of all places. I have no clue how the lady I bought it from ended up with it, I don't speak Spanish so I couldn't ask too many questions.

Do you guys know if they used dev kits back in the day for older systems like SMS, NES, Genesis, SNES etc?

About a decade ago I remember seeing what I suspect to be a 3DO devkit of sorts at a thrift store. It was a typical mid '90s PC but with a Creative 3DO Blaster in it, along with the specific CD drive needed for it. Normally that's not extremely rare, but this one had some switches on the front of the PC wired into the 3DO board, along with some weird soldering jobs on the 3DO board as well. Couldn't afford the 30 bucks it cost at the time so I was forced to pass :(
From what I've seen of devkits over the years, I'm guessing that it was a hackjob devkit for a low budget studio, or maybe a playtesting machine for a bigger-name one; who knows really.

Not to lessen your achievement at all (the price alone is freakin' amazing!), but those DEV kits are EVERYWHERE. Don't know why, but the fact that you grabbed it at a swap meet is a pretty clear indicator that the market is, for whatever reason, saturated wit the damned things :/

Yeah, but they aren't like the units you see for newer consoles. They were often bulky PC boards stuffed into a makeshift housing or simply left uncovered and affixed to a piece of metal, plastic, or even wood (I can't recall which DEV I saw using a wood base, but I definitely remember seeing it and thinking WTF?!).

The older kits were often slapped together before a final design for the console was in place, not to mention that the DEV kits themselves were often a good deal larger than the retail hardware, making it impossible to use the retail shell/housing anyway. You probably wouldn't give an NES DEV kit a second glance if you saw it at a local swap meet like the fellow about with the XBOX DEV unit. It would just look like an ancient, busted computer that someone made in their basement.

I hear original Xbox dev kits are popular for PC case mods because of the extra vertical space. :eek 2:

I have a Playstation Debug unit (DTL-H1000 Series - Blue Console) ,but I can't find the special power cord for it. Found it at a thrift store for about $10-$15.

It requires an AC adapter, right?

You can grab a universal one at Radioshack or online. Or, just figure out what size plug you need and the voltage requirements and find a non-universal one.

edit: it's 12V if I recall correctly.
