Why don't you try games developed with iPhone in mind? I've played the piss out of Jetpack Joyride, which is currently free. Goat Up! is fun too.

I've heard nothing but good things about Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery, and unlike Max Payne and FF III it's something that you probably haven't played (or had the opportunity to play) on other platforms.
I'm sure all three are good, Abut I'd go Superbrothers S&S based on its platform uniqueness. It was designed for the platform (wasn't it?), so it probably takes better advantage of what iOS has to offer.
Also, yes, Jetpack Joyride. That was my pick for GOTY 2011 on iOS.

Will give another vote to GoatUp. Even if it wasn't by one of my favourite developers honouring one of my all-time favourite systems, it's still really easy to pick up and fun to play.
