I am trying to compile a list of 3d polygonal mech games on both computer and console up through 1999. Any help with titles that I missed would be awesome.

Also, help with the release dates would be welcome. I am trying to go with the original year the game was first released. So if the game was released in another country before being released in the US then I would perfer the other countrys release date.

UPDATE: There were quite a few suggestions like Virtual On and Robopit. While these games are cool and certainly fit my description, they are fighting games and not quite what I was hoping to achieve with this list. I am looking for mech games that have the characters and major structures created from polygons. Sprites for trees, bullets, power ups, etc. is no big deal. I want the world, either the expansive open world type (Mechwarrior) or the corridor type (Brahma force), to be fully 3d/ polygonal.

Hopefully this gives a bette idea of the two styles of mech games I am looking for.

Thanks!

DAMN! I really appreciate all the work you put into that list. I see some that I certainly missed, some others I haven't heard of and i'll have to look up, but some i'm not sure if the gameplay style gels with what I'm looking for.

Like Virtual On for instance. I have the game and absolutely love it and you do pilot mechs, but its a fighting game. I'm looking for more of an expansive world or corridore style mech games.

Vortex (http://www.gamefaqs.com/snes/588829-vortex/data) on the SNES?

You know... I had always been curious about this game but had never got around to checking it out. It is certainly a primitive example of the genre and it appears that you are very limited on where you can go. But it is 3d polygonal, so what the hell, we'll throw it on the list.

Tom... I always enjoy your posts because most of the time you chime in with such obscure games. You never go with the obvious and I usually have to look them up (Its refreshing), but I actually HAVE Crecent Hawks Inception on my Atari STe. It is a very good game, but not a 3d polygonal mech action game like what i'm looking for.

The original Mechwarrior is on SNES. Not sure how good it is in comparison to the PC version though.

Robo Pit and Robo Pit 2 are on the PSX. They're completely fighting game style though. I haven't played the second, but the first one you don't do any missions. Like the the arena in Armored Core, you start at the bottom rank, completing higher ranks and getting different parts until you get first.

"Polygonal" in this context would go something like... Mechwarrior on SNES (2D sprites in mode 7 environments) is invalid, but Mechwarrior 2 on PSX/Sat (3D models in 3D environments) is permitted.

Spartacus's list is pretty dang thorough, and between that and the other mentions in this thread, the candidates that fit the bill seem to be running thin. The first quasi-contender that came to mind was Space Hulk: Vengeance of the Blood Angels (1995/1996) on 3D0/Sat/PSX/PC, but that's more soldiers in power armour rather than outright mechs. There's also Slave Zero (1999) on DC/PC, that undoubtedly qualifies. I really enjoyed Slave Zero back when I first played the game, I remember being outright baffled by IGN's review that slagged it with a 3/10 or some crap.

There's also Macross VO for PC (also re-released for Windows XP as Macross VOXP). There's been a ton of fan mods created for this game. It's worth checking out if you're a diehard Macross fan.

Battledrome (1995)

Wow... I hadn't heard of this one, but after looking it up it seems to be where the Metaltech: Earthsiege started. Added to the list!

Mechwarrior on the Snes was actually the first mech game I ever played. My buddy talked about it non stop and eventually rented a copy and we played it like crazy. But it's all sprites. It's not polygonal so i'm not going to put it on the list.

I guess by my original post Robo pit 1 and 2 would qualify. They have polygonal characters in 3d polygonal environments, but they are both fighting games. I'm looking more for the Mechwarrior/ Gungriffon style. I'll edit my original post to make my goal a bit more clear.

What exactly is polygonal? I have those Macross games but haven't played them yet.

Exactly what Drixxel explained below. I don't mind if trees, plants, light posts etc are sprites, but I want the character and enemiy models to be made from polygons and the world and major structures to be polygonal.

I really enjoyed Slave Zero as well although I felt that the sense of size was very odd at times. Its hard for me to explain. Added to the list!

This game looks really awesome. I am a huge Macross/ Robotech fan so I will have to check it out as some point.

I have a few to add that arn't listed.

playstation:

mobile suit z gundam (1997)
mobile suit gundam: chars counterattack (1998)
real robots final attack (1998, plays like virtual on)

mobile suit gundam sidestory 2 (1997)
mobile suit gundam sidestory 3 (1997)

How could I have forgot the Saturn Trilogy. I have the first 2 and although they are fairly easy I really enjoyed them. I'll add them to the list and check out the PSX ones as well.

Thanks for the help everyone! Keep em' coming. Like I said a few posts above I will add to my original post to make my goal a bit more clear... seems like were getting a good amount of fighters (Not a bad thing, but not what I want in this thread.)
