Wolfenstein 3D free through browser.

I like the concept of the game, killing Nazis, but I never was a huge fan of the FPS genre. I didn't like them at all until I played Quake MP, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark MP, and then Unreal Tournament MP. I played the game and finished level 1, floor 2, on the highest difficulty before quitting. Didn't really enjoy it at all. It's a classic, sure, but being the only game out there at the time doesn't mean it's any good.

I like the FPS genre and really shooters in general to be quite honest. I can respect that the game paved alot of the way for the genre as a whole and Wolfenstein 3D was at the time really cool. I do think it shows its age. I can still pick up Doom and have a little fun with it every once and a while but not so much with Wolf.
As far as the more recent outings, I really enjoyed the last one much more than Return personally and I know that I'm probably in the minority there.

Pay dues to the genre? What does that mean?

The game is currently free for iPhone and iPad as well. Not sure how long this deal lasts.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm sure I would have missed that - my guess is it's going to be a today-only thing.

Steam also has it as a daily deal for $1.24, and a bundle for $3.75 that throws in Spear of Destiny and Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Think I'll grab that too.

Yeah, it's the platinum version that includes all the levels from Wolf3D and Spear of Destiny. Good free stuff!

I was always liked the concept of killing democratic capitalists and communists but could never find a genre that catered to me.

Thank you! I don't venture into the App Store much so didn't know this was even available.

The controls take a bit of getting used to but it plays pretty dang slick on the iPhone. What a complete departure from essentially being "led by the nose" of many modern FPS titles.

My very first FPS, in 1992. I can't believe i was only 7 to see/play the beginning of the genre! I remember my dad got it from his work computer, and we had a copy on 3.5" disks. SHIT i feel old, talking about this like an old person when phonographs just came out. I had the pc speakers, so no soundblaster or anything, I still remember all the noises! It was the most fun game i'd ever played, even if i did get some motion sickness sometimes. And in 1999 i finally played it with SB music and sound. But then in 1995, i finally played Doom, and on a computer fast enough to play it..scary shit during ep 1 m9 at 10 years old..

Yeah id software was good at making a scary first person shooter game! Thats why i like to call the 90's ID softwares golden years. IMO they fallen off since then with games like Quake 4 and quake wars and even that live arcade quake game they released. But meh maybe they will get right back up in the saddle again who knows.

I was actually surprised how well it controls (using an iPad), as I was expecting controls to be utter crap.

in a way i am too but in a way i am not.. I mean think about it all it is really is a move forward and backward turn left and turn right and shoot game. There is no strafing or up and down.. its just move around and shoot. Pretty hard f that up imo

Maybe so. But i kinda fear for Doom 4..IF they learn from RAGE and Doom 3. I wish John romero would create some maps for it. OH and Bobby Prince to make a good score.

I could have sworn I played a version of Wolfenstein that had strafing.

Strafing has been in every version of Wolfenstein that I've played, which is PC, SNES, and iOS. Don't know about the other versions though.

Wolfenstein 3D was incredible in its time. Truly a watershed moment in gaming. I can't believe it has been 20 years. Life just isn't fair. I remember being blown away on my friend's Pentium 60! Doom made it obsolete, but it is still a great game. I still play a round or two every couple of months myself.

I love the ugraded music in the 3DO version. Contrary to what Carmack said in the video, I don't believe you can strafe in the Jaguar version. You can in Doom, but not Wolf 3D. Or maybe that was the 3DO version? I can't remember and they are currently in storage, so I can't check.

Anyway, when I need my fix, I play the unlockable port on the XBox version of Return to Castle Wolfenstein. All you have to do is play through Return, and you get a nice dual-stick control version of the game. It's so convenient. No fiddling with emulation. I've heard rumblings by devotees that indicated it wasn't the best port, but I can't find anything that bothers me about it. The XBLA version is also nice as a relatively straightforward port, but they should have included the redbook 3DO soundtrack as an option.

I don't believe you can strafe in the Jaguar version.

From what I recall, there's no dedicated strafe buttons (thanks to the Jaguar's craptacular controllers), but if you hold C you can strafe with no problems. (I think Doom on Jag featured the same setup.)

Ah, yes. Thanks for the clarification. You can't circle strafe is what I was trying to say. The strafe button thing doesn't allow for it.

Man, I remember when my friend downloaded this game on the BBS back when it first came out. Thought it was awesome that you could kill Nazis. Good times.

Sadly, the only version of Wolfenstein 3D I've played was on the 3DO in the form of a demo disc. And I didn't enjoy what I played of it but thats mainly due to being spoiled by Halo and COD games among others. I have the most recent Xbox and 360 games in the series but have never even touched them.
