Vigile writes "NVIDIA today announced a new technology partnership with Gaikai, an on-demand gaming company that competes with OnLive, to bring GeForce GRID to the cloud gaming ecosystem. GRID aims to increase both the visual quality and user experience of cloud gaming by decreasing latencies involved in the process — the biggest hindrance to acceptance for consumers. NVIDIA claims to have decreased the time for game stream capture and decode by a factor of three by handling the process completely on the GPU, while also decreasing the 'game time' with the power of the Kepler GPU. NVIDIA hopes to help both gamers and cloud streaming companies by offering 4x the density currently available and at just 75 watts per game stream. The question remains — will mainstream users adopt the on-demand games market as they have the on-demand video market?"http://a.fsdn.com/sd/twitter_icon_large.png (http://twitter.com/home?status=NVIDIA+GeForce+GRID+Cloud+Gaming+Accel eration%3A+http%3A%2F%2Fbit.ly%2FK4eIwj)http://a.fsdn.com/sd/facebook_icon_large.png (http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgames.slashdot.org%2Fsto ry%2F12%2F05%2F16%2F011232%2Fnvidia-geforce-grid-cloud-gaming-acceleration%3Futm_source%3Dslashdot%26utm_medium% 3Dfacebook)http://www.gstatic.com/images/icons/gplus-16.png (http://plus.google.com/share?url=http://games.slashdot.org/story/12/05/16/011232/nvidia-geforce-grid-cloud-gaming-acceleration?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=googleplus)

This whole cloud gaming thing is really bizarre. It's also a serious threat to GPU manufacturers. I can see why Nvidia would want to get in on the ground floor with "cloud graphics acceleration". They need to get people locked into the idea that they will always need a client GPU. Hell, it might amount to nothing more than a hardware png/zip variant compression.

*edit* Actually, it appears to just be a slight variation of h.264 hardware decoding! Smooth one, Nvidia. You might fool some people.

Seriously? Am I the only old fashioned person here that really really isn't looking forward to gaming turning digital only? I still prefer the CD over mp3's -.-
