View Full Version : Mike Tyson bests me yet again...

I suppose I could train. You know, really take the time to get Tyson's timing down, watch some Youtube videos on someone taking down Kid Dynamite in the first round, and just fight him over and over again. Yet, every time I pick up Punch-Out on that rare occasion, Tyson breaks my spirit like a meteor smashing into a house made of popsicle sticks and I have no fight left. I want to build up my resolve and finally beat this monster, once and for all.
Anyone else haunted by Tyson?

I'm going on memories that are more than 20 years old, but beating him wasn't too difficult once I learned the timing of Mike's punches. The key is surviving that dreadful first round. It was Macho Man who gave me the most problems.

I think what really f*cks with my mind is the fact that I can't take a single punch from Tyson without kissing the canvas. Cliched as it might sound, I am probably my own worst enemy in this fight, oh, and Tyson, too- definitely don't want to leave him out on the list of enemies in this scenario.
I do appreciate the confirmation that he can be beaten. I have a hectic work schedule this week, but perhaps this weekend I'll "train."

I could never beat him myself. Not way back when and certainly not now.
However, I had a buddy come over who hasn't held an nes controller or played a 8 bit game since the 80's. He took him down first try. I was shocked to say the least!

Man, I remember the first time I beat Tyson. Like you, I had to fight him quite a few times before even making it to round two. After that I had to fight him several more times to not get killed in round 2. One night, I was just struggling along, expecting to lose again, and with one pixel of stamina left, I somehow managed to barely squeeze out a third knockdown at the end of round 3. I couldn't believe it, I beat Mike Tyson! That was an awesome feeling. So do what I did, keep trying and get lucky.:|
I loved watching the ending, with that goddamn "Daddy I found a code" password that didn't do anything.

If you have the MTPO bug, be sure to check out KingdomCarts' series of Punch-Out tutorial videos, first one is here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCUMYtLemrs).
He never finished up the video series and ended up dropping off the planet, sadly.

I'm in your debt, Dave! I never knew the alternate punch strategy, and now I can never go back. Thanks!

I don't remember that. Could you explain?

I think he's taking about the new world circuit code. Basically, it starts you off at King Hippo (as I recall) and the difficulty is ramped up. I think there were some palette swaps for the backgrounds as well.

Wow, has anyone ever done a TAS of MTPO?
I did finally beat Mike based on the "proper punch" technique a year or two ago. It haunted me for years taht I could get to Mike w/o even getting knocked down, but could barely ever even knock Mike down once.
I remember back in 7th grade a friend of mine said Mike was easy. He too picked up the controller and knocked him out on first try, round 3. Pissed me off.
Took me over 20 years to beat that sumbitch.

I am slowly working my way through my backlog, and I'll make it to MTPO eventually. As a kid I never could beat Tyson.

Although I did beat Tyson back in the day as a kid I always won by TKO. I could never knock him down and get him to stay down, I always needed the three knock down rule.

KingdomCarts did a handful of excellent strategy and tutorial videos before disappearing. I've dug out the links to the MTPO specific videos for easier viewing, damn shame he never finished the series. Some of the intros for the MTPO videos are pretty funny...

I was pretty sure I remember, as a kid, knocking Tyson out in the second round. I had tried to do it again may times since then, but I couldn never repeat that performance. I was really starting to think it was a hallucination!

I've been playing this game off and on the past few days and I wonder if I'll ever beat it. Kudos to anybody who can beat Tyson. I can't even get past the first round. Longest I can last is about 45 seconds.

Once you learn Tyson's patterns, it's only a matter of reflexes. If I could beat him when I was 10, you could beat him as an adult. You can do it!
I used to be able to beat Tyson somewhat regularly when I was a kid but I haven't done so on the few recent occasions that I've tried. I guess if I really applied myself I could learn to do it again but there are too many other games I haven't finished that need finishing.

Today Tyson lost to Little Mac by decision. It was glorious. I shouted in exultation, jumping up out of my chair after the decision came in. This might well be one of the biggest video game highs I've experienced in years. I had to use breathing exercises to steady my nerves in order to keep from jumping the gun and dodging too early because Iron Mike's lightning fast uppercuts get me so on edge. Regardless, I was the better fighter today. Hell and yes.

Ah, looks like Kingdom Carts account got pulled offline. Strange since he still hasn't logged in for years. Oh well, glad I downloaded all his content when I had the chance.

Congrats Treismac. I have the same problem. I can run through everyone with no problems, but for some reason, Tyson slaughters me. Maybe one day I can knock him out. I know Friday the 13th gets a lot of flak for being a bad game, but for some reason I use to go back to it over and over. I think there were similarities to fighting Jason for the third time and fighting Mike Tyson. I know in one of The AVGN episodes, he points that out. I use to practice fighting Jason just to warm up before a big fight with Tyson. Now it's a breeze to go through Jason 3 times, but that damn Tyson. Aaaahhhhh!

Congratulations, man. That "accomplishment high" is what video games are all about, isn't it? Anyway, make sure you buy yourself a pizza, or beer, or something.
