My youngest daughter recently brought me her DS Lite, purchased years ago and passed down from her older sister. The problem is that she had the top screen part in one hand and the bottom screen part in the other. One of the hinges had been broken for a while, and it looks like she just yanked the two pieces apart (the top has the wires dangling).

Can this be saved, or should I just toss it?

If nothing else... Most likely the buttons, LCD panels, speakers, and other parts are still useful.

Top screen will be stuffed, microphone will be stuffed, wifi aerial will be stuffed. Luckily if you are keen parts for these are cheap, I have just re-furbed about 8 or so for myself and will be passing onto family members/selling them. I also have fixed heaps for the Game Traders store I work for.

I get everything from ebay, unfortunately getting GOOD quality top screens is getting hard. I bought 2 lots of 4 from 2 different The first lot 2 screens were fuzzy and 1 looks to have been assembled with dust on the backlight as there is a smudge. The 2nd lot 2 had yellow/green backlight instead of white.

The first port of call would be to plug it into the charger to see if it will charge. If it does take it apart and check the condition of the button conductive pads. The directional one seems to be common to tearing. These are cheap as well ($1AU posted). If you are going that far may as well replace the touchscreen.

You will also have to de-solder the speakers and re-solder to the top screen (what a cock of a design!). Just take note of the orientation of the speakers. Also you have to roll the top screen ribbon cable a certain direction.

If you are keen changing out the card slot isn't to difficult either.

So I reckon (in Australian money posted) at a minimum

microphone + aerial $2
Top screen $10
Case $10 (can get cheaper I use the ones with "art work")

add
touch screen $2
button conductive pad $1
card slot $3

Here are the pics of mine I did recently.

If the connectors were just pulled and not torn, then this.
