View Full Version : JVC X'Eye FM Audio Problem

I bought a JVC X'Eye knowing it had an audio problem, woe is me! I had hoped it was a capacitor issue, and while there were a few older/bulging caps, a full re-cap hasn't solved the issue.

Here's what it sounds like: http://youtu.be/OjPDd2CIq9w

The system works SPECTACULARLY with the exception of this audio issue. There is no visible damage and I am using the original JVC power supply.

I've replaced all 52 electrolytic capacitors (35 on the main board, 17 on the B board) and cleaned everything extensively.

Any ideas what else I can try?

Check for damaged traces or busted components of any kind, those are some very strange problems.

You sure nothing went in backwards?

That video was taken before anything was switched around inside. All the internal parts and solder joints appeared stock until I started playing around inside.

I need to replace my broken multimeter badly, I was hoping that someone would have experienced this kind of sound issue before.

I posted images of the main board (where this problem has to be -- it exists without Board B plugged in (I think that mostly controls the microphone input and CD-ROM drive?) as well as where I think the traces for audio go -- from what I'm read they come off pins 55/56 of the 315-5660 ASIC. I can't follow the traces as it gets lost in the silk-screening and bundle of surface-mount components just to the lower-right from the ASIC.

Without having diagrams of how audio travels in this it's a bit of a pain thanks to my inability to follow those traces. What could make the sound go so whacked and off-pitch?

EDIT: I should note that I tested that X'Eye and made another video with a VA0 Genesis 2 just before for my own comparison -- I did not need to adjust the volume at all, so amplification is fine (I'm assuming).

EDIT2: More info -- I am using the correct original power supply. I have switched to a Genesis 2 adapter (I know to not let it turn on the CD-side of the device with it) and I get the same performance/results from it. I am of course back to using the correct power adapter for all tests, since I'm now confident the adapter is not the issue.

Does anyone have pinouts from the 315-5660 ASIC handy, or have an idea of how I can check the audio being produced directly from there?
