Xbox 360 hookup compatibility

I have an Xbox 360 arcade console that I need the hookups for (video and power).

I have been contacted by someone who has the hookups for an Elite system.

Are the hookups compatible between the 1st and 2nd generation systems? As far as I can tell they are, but I just wanted to confirm that is correct.

All AV cables designed for the Xbox 360 are compatible with all systems. Standard HDMI cables will require an HDMI port though which is something that early Xbox 360's lacked.

All power supplies aren't compatible with all systems. They've been reducing the power needs of the console periodically. You can use a higher rated power supply from an older console on a more recent console with lower power needs since it will just take what it needs.

But you can't use a lower rated power supply from a more recent system on a older console with higher power requirements. The power output wouldn't be adequate and furthermore, they've designed the power plugs to make it physically impossible to ever plug an incompatible 360 power supply into a console it can't support.

Not enough detail in your post to give you an answer. Check the power requirements on your console and make sure his is rated for as high or higher. And make sure if the AV cable you're recieving is HDMI that your console has an HDMI port.

I was thinking the issue would more likely be with the video, rather than the power, but now I realize it is the other way around.

You answer was fine, as it clarified what I would need to know.

My console doesn't have an HDMI port, so I need to make sure the cables are simple AV cables.

I have the power rating listed on the console. I know the system is older since it lacks the HDMI port, so based on your response, I'm guessing the power supply isn't going to work.

But I'll give them the information and see what happens.

I wanted to give this old thread a bump since there is an update-and a new question.

The update is I found a power brick!

So now the situation is this:

Where the power cord (the cord that connects from the wall outlet to the power brick) connects to the brick there is a piece, which stops an ordinary power cord (one used for pcs, monitors, etc.) from being inserted.

The question is: Can I cut a notch into the cord to make it fit?

Since this is the cord that simply brings the power into the brick, and the brick is what converts the input to the appropriate amount, I don't see an issue, but I suppose there could be a reason, so I wanted to confirm.

AC power cords

The AC power cord is 1.8 meters (approximately 5 feet, 9 inches) long and is detachable from the power supply unit.

The end of the power cord that plugs into the PSU has two or three holes. The number of holes corresponds to the number of prongs on the PSU. You must use only the two-prong PSU with the cord that connects by using two holes and use only the three-prong PSU with the cord that connects by using three holes. If you use a power cord other than the cord that was designed for your PSU, you may damage your PSU or your Xbox 360 console.

The plug at the end of the power cord that connects to your electrical outlet can be one of several types. The plug type depends on the country and region where you purchased your console. See the following table for more information about the different plug types.

So the official line is, no, do not force a different cord to work. Whether that's true or just MS wanting you to buy your stuff from them, couldn't say. Don't think I'd risk it unless it was impossible to find a proper cord.

You can take your 360 to Gamestop and pickup a used power supply that way. They're usually around $30.


If you have a Movie Trading Company in your area, you can pick up a PS at a decent price there.

Just as an update for anyone that finds this thread in the future with similar questions, this information is no longer correct with the release of the XB1 lookalike "Super Slim" 360 a while back. I'm not sure what the power supply situation is like there so what I said many months ago might apply, but the latest 360 revision has dropped support for the existing 360 cables.

It's now HDMI only with the only analog support being a new proprietary composite only output. The standard multi video out port from earlier 360's has been eliminated. So things like 360 VGA cables and component cables are no longer compatible.

I looked up that page to find out about the cord. The power brick has the three prong connector so I am going to use the three hole wire connector. Maybe it is special cord, but it seems to me that it is more aesthetics (and/or making it look proprietary) than functionality.

Like Leo_A responded to the initial post, the output after the brick has to match the system, since the power outputs are different.

It just seems to me that the different cord can be used, even if it is modified, since it is simply bringing in the power to be converted. I've seen sites with others who have modified the cord, but just because it has been done doesn't mean it will work! So I just wanted to see if anyone had any additional knowledge, since I'm certainly not an expert on power supplies.

Since I haven't heard anything that would lead me to believe it is different, I'll probably give it a shot, unless I happen to find the cord in the meantime.
