So which of the Adventure Island games is your favorite?

I'd hate to pick a favorite, but if pressed I'd have to go with the Turbografx-16 version, New Adventure Island, which I just beat today. It has all the charm, fun, and feel of the series taken to the highest point in the series. Hell, the dance sequence in between worlds by itself is almost enough to edge out the rest. :P

Adventure Island IV hands down! Finally a game in the series that deserves the name Adventure in its title.

I hadn't even heard of the Wii version until now. Is the Gamecube version not included in the poll because it is a port or something?

I do recommend Super Adventure Island 2. None of the games are really all that stellar, to be honest, but SAI2 at least has a little bit of complexity going for it.

If running from the left of the screen to right frantically isn't adventure, sir, I'd don't care to know what is.

The Gamecube and PS2 versions are remakes, I believe. Also, I only had 10 options to work with for DP's poll.

Super Adventure Island with Streets of Rage music. The boss music, and level ending music fits quite nicely! As does the rest of the tracks.

Cool thread! Adventure Island deserves some lovin'.

Super Adventure Island is fun, but it's so easy and short by comparison to the other games in the series and even a little boring despite the variety of levels. That there's no run button speed boost is pretty lame, and the jumping controls are a touch weird, what with the way momentum & jumping height is decided. The soundtrack is awfully rad and the look of the game is appealing, but it's lesser Adventure Island, in my opinion.

New Adventure Island is just awesome and my definite favourite of the series. Gameplay is quick and tense, controls are highly responsive, it features a great cartoony style with tons of colour, the music is super bouncy, there's a nice spread of weaponry, and it doesn't bog itself down with an overworld or inventory screen between stages. Personally, I'm much more a fan of the straightforward Adventure Islands and I consider New Adventure Island to be the best of the bunch.

Absolutely!! At its best, Adventure Island is some of the best side-scrolling platforming ever executed. The more and more I play this series, the more I appreciate the genius of the "fruit timer" and what it does to make the game play of the series as amazing as it is.

Yeah. The lack of a run button blows my mind. Without it, it just isn't Adventure Island.

Well said. While I do love 2 & 3, the original and New Adventure Island are the pinnacle of the series. In a similar way, I feel like the original Super Mario Bros. is perfection and the later 2D platforming sequels are great, but they just are not as amazing as the original with the need for flawless timing and precise game play. There is just too much leeway for error in too much of Super Mario Bros 3 & Super Mario World as well as in Adventure Island 2 & 3. I love having to nail a jump perfectly or die. It's what makes these games so damn great.

I also appreciate the level of memorization that is necessary to finish levels on Adventure Island and New Adventure Island. This adds a nice layer to the game's game play. This was lost in 2 & 3 for the most part.
