Has anyone competed in any major video game competitions that involved old school games?
I live in Canada and some small moms and pops video game stores will put some on from time to time..however it's not anything major like back in the day.
On a side note has anyone taken part in any video game competitions during the 16 bit era?
I competed in the Block Buster World Game Championships, Super Star Fox Weekend in a touring Nintendo Truck and a Super Mario competition for the SNES again in a touring truck..
Those were the days it seems..seems like now a days nobody wants to compete outside of their homes..

I competed in a local Street Fighter II: Turbo Hyper Fighting tournament at 'Space Port' arcade in The Lake Forrest Plaza Mall in New Orleans East, back when the game was current. I won each match I foght (2 or 3, I don't remember), but I was disqualified because I didn't return in time after a break period (boo!).

"Red Storm Rising" Ultimate Challenge (Commodore 64) - 1988/1989 (http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/138172-red-storm-rising-c-64-ultimate-challenge-materials-release-topic/)
I came third (with others) in the Sega Sub-Terrania competition:

Since I lived in UK at the time and the competition was only open to US residents I was surprised that I even won, and actually received something.

I was in the NWC back in '90. Didn't go very far. I don't do well under pressure like that. I tend to forget things. I practiced playing all three games for a couple of weeks beforehand, but I had a rough time recalling what I should have done in each game each time it started in the competition. Still a fun experience, plus I played a TON of games that had not yet been released :)
