A question about the different versions of Sonic Spinball.

Does anyone have the original first version of this game with the Sonic theme? And if so do you know if there's any way to differentiate this cart from the normal one?

i believe there never was other versions other then the american variation and the megadrive variation. Which i don't know if there was any difference other then a very slight change of the box art.

I got the game at launch, and it's no different than any other copy I've played.

It's true that there are two US versions of Sonic Spinball. As goatse (nice name, pal :ass:) says, the original version made use of the theme song from Sonic 1 and 2. The developers discovered that the rights to the song were not owned by Sega, but were still held by Dreams Come True, the band that did the music for the first two Sonic games. @_@ Spinball composer Howard Drossin wrote a new theme and redid a couple other tracks, but copies of the game with the original music were accidentally released in "limited numbers." :pimp: The European and Japanese versions of the game are based on the second US version.

I'll have to check, but I don't think my copy is the original version. :puppydogeyes: Also, I don't think anyone knows for sure how many of these copies made it out, and I don't think there is any way to distinguish between them, besides actually playing the game. In any case, there doesn't seem to be any real demand for the original version--checking eBay shows many listings for Spinball, but I didn't see any that were advertised as being the original release. :|

Yeah, you're definitely right about that. I'm sure at least a few people are going to be grabbing every copy of Spinball they can in the hopes that they'll find the original version. :bigmac: Still, we're a pretty small subset of the collecting community, and this version of Spinball isn't really a widely recognized variant. Most collectors will never know about this, which means demand will be very low, and sellers won't even know that they should specify which version they're selling. When eBay sellers list early releases of popular games like Ocarina of Time or Final Fantasy VII, they almost always note in the auction's title that what they're selling is the gold cart or the black label release, whatever the case may be. :cool: I've even seen incredibly specific listings like, "FINAL FANTASY VII (7) MISPRINT VERSION WITH MISPLACED LETTER I! It's like the Japan-only 1.0 version of Tetris for Game Boy that has different music. :2gunfire: Even though it is said to have received a relatively low pressing and is actually visibly different from later releases (different stamp on the cart--23 for 1.0, 22A and 23A for 1.1) most collectors have no idea it exists, so it doesn't sell for any more than a regular Tetris cart would.

My mind is blown, I just checked my copy and now I'm sad lol. I have a friend who picked up like 4 copies in a craigslist ad...Calling her now lol. I wan't to find this copy...the sucky thing..is finding it in the wild will all be based on luck unless you just buy every copy you find since there is no visual difference.

actually the japanese even has a different game over theme, so thats yet another version :)

I can't to get working the stage selection cheat on the first version (A,down,B,donw etc)

I can confirm that this release does exist. One of my friends had the original version growing up and has been looking for another copy for years. He actually didn't even know that there was a different one until mega collection came out.

Same thing happened when I found out another friend had a Not-For-Resale Kiosk/Demo cart of Turtles in Time - the only other time he'd seen one was in a goodwill, and it was ALSO a NFR. Difference is, he's still got his.

Interesting. After hearing that though I must say I prefer the later release. That first one sounds horrible.
