View Full Version : Turbo Grafx-16 collecting in-the-wild and online in 2012

I went crazy collecting for the Turbografx two years ago and ended up with a lot of fun times and fun games. Recently I've been hauling my TurboExpress to work and have been playing it on my breaks. I came to the conclusion that I needed more games! What would the "in the wild" landscape be like in 2012, so many years later?

When I was at my hardest-core local collector, visiting thrift shores and flea markets weekly, Turbografx stuff was very rarely seen. I'm happy with what I came up with over three weeks of searching. I scoured my local small franchise retro game stores and ended up with a respectable haul and supplies for future loose games.

My best shot of luck was with all of the sports games show in the picture. Old sports games are always hated but I feel lucky to have them for this particular system. All were bought in bulk at one particular store.

Some deals I am more happy with than others. Cratermaze and Veigues Tactical gladiator were $19 each and only had the games/manuals; a bit high. However, my loose R-Type was $10 which I consider quite a good deal.

I've also been buying any copies of Keith Courage I can find, for the purpose of using them as cases for the card only games. Now I just need to find a template for the spine text and I'll be good. Making hand written stickers is a little sloppy, but works.

I'm proud of finding a Keith Courage comic book, I never knew they existed until I started this second 'hunt.' It's in the upper right of the picture.

The only other games I have coming in are from auctions, but if anyone likes this thread, I'll be sure to update it with a second picture for all that. The games found online in the picture are Time Cruise and Dungeon Explorer.

Now to search for some front cover manual scans to make things look slightly better for the loose games.

There's a member here who sells replacement labels for the cases, PM Sparky if you'd be interested in getting them. I'm not sure how much they are though, just ask him if you're interested.

I was thinking the same thing when I read about the replacement lables.

Here is a link for a thread on Sparky.

(I thought I remembered a more in depth thread here at DP, but that is all a quick search turned up.)

Finding Turbo Grafx items in the wild now is much like it has always been. You still don't come across them that often. But now most of the older systems/games are less common to come across these days, particularly at a decent price.

I remember my first find off Craigslist....$65 of 23 Turbo Grafx/CD games including Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Valis II, and Ys III (CD, manuals, and case) though no Turbo CD at the time. But I did furlough a working one later for $50 complete with wires, system, and carrying case for my birthday no less. Lucky b@stard, I know. :D

My advice is seek out the low-end classics like Bonk Adventure, Bonk Revenge, Ninja Spirit, Neutopia, Legendary Axe, Blazing Lazers, etc. and if you fancy the upper-tier stuff like Air Zonk, Ys, and Lords of Thunder, I recommend Virtual Console as a wallet-friendly alternative to Ebay.

Good luck. :)

*Sigh* Yeah, I own two Turbografx-16 systems, but the Virtual Console is how I pick up and play "new" TG-16 games.

If you'd like to trade physical Hu-Cards, I happen to have some extras I'd love to swap for ones I don't own.

Devil's Crush
Ninja Spirit
Bloody Wolf
Bonk's Adventure
Keith Courage

Yes, my wallet burns with these TG16 purchases. I've read this thread and the replacement spine labels look really nice, I may get at least the card games to help things out. I would love to trade, but I have all of those titles. When the dust settles I wonder how many titles I will be from a complete US region collection? Humm?????

Here is what I have from my first wallet buster collect-a-thon:
US DUO system (boxed)
US Turbo Express system

Games:
Bonk's Adventure
Ninja Spirit
Ordyne
Blazing Lazers
Galaga '90
Sidearms
Neutopia
Bloody Wolf
Cosmic Fantasy 2 (CD)
Air Zonk
Bonk's Revenge
Neutopia II
Valis 2 (CD)
Buster Bros. (CD)
Sinistron
Legendary Axe II
Final Zone II (CD)
Shadow of the Beast (CD)

Here is what I have from my first wallet buster collect-a-thon:

Exceedingly respectable list of classic TG-16 titles

Awesome! Very cool collection indeed. Mine looks like this at the moment:

Devil's Crush (2x)
Cadash
Alien Crush
Sidearms
Neutopia
Tale Spin
New Adventure Island
Legendary Axe II
Ninja Spirit (2x)
Bloody Wolf (2x)
Dragon's Curse
Cyber-Core
Bonk's Revenge
Air Zonk (2x)
Battle Royale
Military Madness
Bonk's Adventure (2x)
Keith Courage (2x)
Galaga '90
Vigilante
Splatterhouse
Darkwing Duck

It is too damn bad the games go for as much as they do. When I started retro video game collecting I had hopes of expanding my TG-16 collection along with my NES and SNES collections. Yeah... As it stands, I have a pretty decent Virtual Console collection of TG-16 games. I can't justify spending so much more for physical TG-16 games when they are so affordable on the Wii's VC. NES and SNES games, on the other hand...

Not so fast. I remember you smacking down hard on another thread anyone who prints repro labels and liners. What might this do to the collectibles market if every Joe Schmoe starts committing "fraud"?

Dang, a bit of bad news from one of my online sellers...seems my copy of Raiden was really vaporware. $60 is the lowest price I can find for one with a case and manual. Cripes, the darned arcade board only cost me $45! Looks like one of my favorite shooters is going to take awhile to find a a good price. How I longed to play this portable :(

I am against replacing labels in general, he wanted the labels to label his own custom cases instead of "repairing" existing copies. I see it like making nice labels for Universal Game Cases. Several of those labels in the set are for games that never came with cases in the first place. He's not replacing labels on the cards.

That and it's Turbografx, fewer people care about having complete copies. Not as many people are after the outer boxes for the games because they were so flimsy, people just want the cases and manuals. I still would be against making repro replacement parts to "complete" a game.

Umm, I see the wording "my own custom cases" nowhere in his post, and the picture appears to show nothing but standard looking games and cases.

So, hypothetically, if another collector, at some future time, were to buy some of these "custom" games at his estate auction and unknowingly commit "fraud" by completing his box-only copies, no harm, no foul in your opinion? Your logic isn't lining up with your arguments in the "fraud" thread.

Turbografx 16/CD/Super CD has a collection of 138 official games not counting Implode, Meteor Blaster DX or the Hawaiin Girl CDs. I say you're close to 1/3 complete but have a long way. Cool, you Ys and Air Zonk, two of my top 3 favorite Turbo games. Nice! :D

How much did that Turbo Duo cost ya?

He's using cases of Keith's Courage as custom cases for other games, he wanted nicer looking labels compared to handwritten ones. You can add a label for Magical Chase even when it never came with a case at all. I'm more against people replacing labels on carts and making them look exactly like the originals. If I got the wrong case I can still swap it out with a correct one later, if I got a game with a new label I'd have to get another copy of the game.

I personally wouldn't want a case with a new label, I would have to track down another copy with a legit original label. This is pretty off topic for this thread.

Prices for the,TG16 are out of controll but i'd say the PCE is still fair game.Any time i been put off by the prices for the u.s version a game i usely settle for the jpn one and it's usely cheaper.

Still if buying pce titles instead on hucards isn't you're thing the creator of the (everdrive flash cartridge) is making one for the TG16/PCE :D

I've never once come across TG-16 stuff in the wild, not unless you count gaming conventions and such as "in the wild". All of my stuff was bought online, although I'm more into the Japanese releases than the US stuff. The US library just isn't that amazing, in my opinion. Too few games made it over, and the prices are way too high.

$8 Dynastic Hero on Wii VC vs. $400 Dynastic Hero IRL always wins out. Always. Heck, the decision is even easier skipping the $300+ down payment for Turbo Duo/TCD w/ Super Card/PCE-Duo while showcasing their best stuff like Air Zonk, Lords of Thunder, Ys, Splatterhouse, Gate of Thunder, Bonk, Soldier Blade, Rondo of Blood, etc is nothing to scuff at. The fact they're still on VC despite Hudson disappearing months after tells me Konami isn't planning to take them away any time for the foreseeable future. Even if they did, then what makes Turbo games special compared to all other DLC susceptible to the whims of their proprietary owners?

I'm just saying since the last release i seen was gradius II.Afther that nothing more ture games such as dracula-x and dynastic hero, are cheaper on the wii/vc.Still what happens when the service is no longer around. Then you're screwed unless it continues on for a few more years on the wii u.

Still it doesn't matter to me to much since i have a (duo-r) all ready and most of the games i wanted.

Btw i mention eariler there some (irem TG16) titles have been removed from the vc.

Ninja Spirit
R-type
Vigilante
Legend of Hero Tonma

I can say I'm pretty jealous of you guys and your TG16 finds in the wild, I do flea market/thrift store runs weekly and the only place I've ever found to have TG16 stuff is a game dealer in the Super Flea who way over prices all of his bad condition games and systems. One of these days...one of these days! ::shakes fist::

Rarest and hardest to find in the wild for me has been a tie between Neo Geo and TG-16. Basically never see them. Recently, a used game store north of me has some TG-16 games and even had a complete system a couple months back.

Yeah, It kind of sucks, the 2 consoles I've never owned...well this would be why..I never find them. My friends always say "just buy it online man!" , I can't do it..I pride myself on having a collection found completely in the wild! :P

I did a little bit of re-organizing today and thought this shot would please some. Thanks to the member that pointed out how far I had to go for a full set, that helped put things in perspective. I tried to put this together on the cheap, but the collection has mushroomed to almost 4 figures.

I'll definitely be looking for a copy of Raiden in the next couple of months, and I think the replacement case labels would really help the look of the collection on the shelf. I'm missing 9 manuals mostly from the later non jewel case releases. Parasol Stars + Military Madness Hu-Cards are a bit beat. Here you go, not as impressive as some, but it's mine.

You're off to a good start then my only advice replace the turbo duo capacitor asap, since they break down easily and cause sound issue.
