http://ca.ign.com/articles/2012/06/25/what-on-earth-is-nintendo-up-to, This is a good article from IGN about Nintendo choosing to make big product announcements when, where and how they want to. I agree with the one statement about E3 just being a place for the console companies to show pie charts, graphs, and revenue models for the press, financial analysts and executives. Save that shit for the boardroom, we wanna see games, games, and more games!

I love slightly chubby (yet fully sexy) female journos like Keza and Abbie Heppe, but she omits a major detail: E3 is Nintendo's show, in part. E3 is owned and operated by the ESA, and Nintendo is one of its bigger member companies. It's in their best interest to support the show, especially since proceeds from E3 make up a large part of the lobbying group's revenue.

The shows aren't so important anymore because of their nature as press events. An organized gathering for both press and exhibitors made perfect sense back when most of us were getting the information through traditional channels. But given the power shift, a specific timeframe when everybody says "ok, now's the time to start talking" is fairly arbitrary.
