View Full Version : PSX Reccomendations
I used to have a bunch of games for the PSX, unfortunately the only ones I ever played were Breath of Fire 3 and 4, FF7, 9 and Tactics.
I really only like turn based RPGs and prefer 2D ones, pretty much anything similar to BOF 3 and 4 which are my two all time favorite games.
Looking for something besides RPGs to though. I read the best undiscovered PSX gems, and didnt seem interested in most of them, I know most of the big names (Crash Spyro MGS RE) and Im looking for some of the good lesser known games.
Any Ideas?

Omega Boost. Do NOT miss that one. One of the best PS1 shooting games, with a killer sound track.

The Playstation was the raining king of RPGs back in the day. You'll find no shortage of turn-based RPG combat. To name a few great titles:
Lunar: Silver Star Story
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue
Legend of Dragoon
Chrono Cross
Some others that may have some RPG elements, but don't have turn-based combat. These are some of my personal favorites that I played growing up:
Legend of Mana
Brave Fencer Musashi
Tales of Destiny I & II

FFVI and Chrono Trigger are two 2D RPGs you should definitely play if you haven't already. (The latter comes as part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles, which also includes FFIV.)
I also completely agree on Chrono Cross, which was a blast. (Suggest playing after Chrono Trigger.)

Star Wars Jedi Power Battles! Not a perfect game by any means, but a real blast that I have played many, many times over....and it's somewhat rare for me to replay games until many years have passed. JPB is a game that will glitch out sometimes, and you have to, if this makes sense, learn to interpret the depth of the game for some of the platforming sections. What is great about it is that it's really just an old school beat-em-up with Jedi, each with their own unique abilities/skills and some rpg-ish upgrade elements. The best part, for me at least, is learning to deflect blaster shots back at the enemies. You can hold the block button down and deflect the shots in random directions, or learn the timing and deflect the blasts back at the attacker.
You can also get it for the DreamCast. The DC version has a nice upgrade in visuals, one additional Jedi, and some(janky) mini-games.

I'm going to say give Xenogears a shot, the backgrounds are all fully 3d environments but the characters are nice 2D sprites. It also has a fairly standard turn based combat system for its day.
It's by far my favorite RPG just for its detailed world, music, and scope of the storyline. It was just another great example of Square at its peak.
I'ed also recommend Chrono Cross, 3D with pre-rendered backgrounds (like FF7) but still a great game.
Valkyrie Profile is also a solid choice from that era and the Saga Frontier games were pretty good. Both games have an interesting narrative flow thats not exactly linear so its interesting for a change of pace however both are mostly 2D games.
Star Ocean 2 is another great one from that time period, again 2D outside of the world map.
This thread makes me want to break out some PS1 classics, but so little time now for these huge games..:(
