Hey guys, tonight two friends and I were watching that old Nickelodeon show called "Are You Afraid of the Dark". If you're 20 or older, you probably remember it!
Anyways, we all started laughing when we saw this!

One of the characters spent his brothers money on a fake genesis game, called "Zeebo's Big House"!
I love to find silly things like that in classic film and television shows.

Anyone else have examples of this? How cool would it be to play Zeebo's Big House?

On the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air I saw Will playing NES with a Genesis controller.

Probably. Also on That 70's Show they modded Pong to have smaller paddles.

In the movie "Boyz N The Hood" I saw the thugs playing Genesis, they don't show which game it is though!

Seems like there was an Astrocade in vacation with a fake game being played.

There's an episode of LifeStories: Familes in Crisis, a 90s "after-school special" type series which was broadcast by HBO, in which a kid plays Super Mario Kart using an NES controller. That would be bad enough, but the episode is set in January of 1983.

In the movie "If Looks Could Kill" one of the characters is playing an Atari Lynx at the breakfast table. Blue Thunder if I remember correctly.

I was so jealous at the time because I REALLY wanted a Lynx, but I got one a few years later so it turned out alright. :)

That fake Genesis game is actually a double reference, since it's also referencing the third episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, "Laughing in the Dark", which was all about Zeebo the Clown. The show is fun like that, there are a few things from the early episodes that they reference throughout the show, even though there's no real continuity beyond that. Can't say I remember "Tale of the Crimson Clown", though. That's the third season, which I don't have burned into my brain quite as well as the first couple seasons.

I would imagine that Zeebo's Fun House would be pretty damn terrifying, haha.

Jon Lovitz was playing a TMNT Turtles in Time arcade cabinet in North................even though he was on the demo screen and you can see game over while he is 'playing'.

Haha yeah! I actually knew it was a cross reference to Laughing in the Dark, but didn't feel it was necessary to include for the topic!
It's one of the more popular episodes @_@
In the same episode this fake game is shown in, he places it near an NES on his desk. Sorry kid, it won't fit in there!

You can also see a Sonic 2 poster in that same episode.

i remember an episode of rosanne, the kid wanted a super nintendo and the family couldnt afford the $200+ dollars, eventually he says he was going to see a buddy who had a genesis, by the end of the episode they'd bought a snes and the mother was playing mario world and i remember the sound effects being out of place lol

also cant remember when my 2 dads was first aired, as i only rmember seing it from '90 onwards, but the guy who played burke in aliens was playing legend of zelda 2 with the other guy during the intro piece. my major memories is him killing a bunch of smaller enemies then reaching a bigger one who flattens him and he says "im sorry i killed your babies".. and they were using te advantage stick

Elijah Wood plays F-Zero at some point in the movie Forever Young. I remember my sister watching this and I saw F-zero, I wanted a SNES so bad after that. Unfortunately, I didn't get one until about a year and a half ago.

I was watching American Ninja 5 today and a Game Gear is featured pretty prominently. They even call it by name.

In Child's Play 3 where Andy goes to military school there's a little kid playing a Lynx while he's getting his hair cut. I think he's playing Blue Lightning, but I haven't watched that movie in over a decade.

Edit: Also in the great college movie Glory Daze, Slosh makes a home made polygon shooter on his SNES.

Boy Meets World, in the episode "Better Than The Average Cory", sort of featured the N64/Banjo Kazooie. It's the episode where Cory starts critiquing an art piece at the museum, thinking he really knows his stuff. Then some young teen girl comes up and opines, Cory dismisses her as a silly little girl, but it turns out she is the artist Alexandra Nechita(playing herself). Nechita laments that she rarely gets to be a kid, seeing as she is a famous artist. She ends up hitting it off with Cory's sister, Morgan, and the two get very excited when Morgan mentions her N64/Banjo Kazooie. I'm not sure, but I think she asked Morgan if she knew how the beat the witch or something. I'm not sure if it ever showed the N64 or not.

I also think they may have shown a game system(SNES?) on the episode where Topanga was babysitting some little boy and Cory came over to make out with Topanga. He ends up undermining her authority by letting the kid stay up late and plays video games with him. It's one of the episodes where Cory is ticked off that everyone thinks he is safe and harmless and he tries to live on the edge a bit.

As I recall the Sega Game Gear served as a plot point in that '90s cinematic opus known only as Surf Ninjas.

Does anyone remember the show Ghostwriter? There was a custom arcade machine in the first story arc that used Sega Genesis controllers.

In the movie Blast From the Past, a Primal Rage arcade cabinet can be seen int the bar that was built over the bomb shelter where Brendan Fraiser's family lives. Problem was that scene was supposed to take place in 1991.

Wow! I'm proud of my thread for prospering and getting a lot of responses.

I definitely should have remembered the Child's Play 3 reference of the game gear, I watched that several times.

Thanks every one!

Jackie Chan give the kid in a wheelchair a Game Gear in Rumble in the Bronx. I think it's seen a couple time throughout the movie.

Just thought of two others. In Mallrats, Jason Lee's character wakes up and continues a game of NHL All-Star Hockey prompting his buddy to utter the classic line, "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned for Sega."

In Swingers there are a couple scenes where they are playing NHLPA 93 on Genesis as well. Great quotes about the instant replay feature so you can see if "bullshit" happened in the game.

EDIT: Thought it was NHL 94 in Swingers as they talked about fighting being removed, but Google says otherwise.

I don't know if you guys would count this because the show is technically a 2000's show and 2000's console. but I was watching an episode of King of Queens, and one guy randomly pulled out a GBA and starting playing it..... even though it was making Atari style sound effects. Also in the same episode they mentioned a Playstation 2 and had a controller. It made me think of this thread when I seen it.

You're right. In the later episodes they had a Dreamcast on their TV.

Another one, but its a movie released in 2000. In the movie Frequency, they play a Nintendo 64 pretty early on in the movie.

John Connor's playing a full sit down Afterburner in the arcade when the T-1000 first tracks him down in Terminator 2. A little earlier he can be seen playing Missile Command as well.

In Futurama, there is an episode titled "Anthology of Interest II", which is split into three parts. In the second part, Fry asks a "what-if" machine what would happen if the world was like a video game. There are references to DOOM, Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Berzerk, Space Invaders, and Q*bert. There may be more, but I haven't seen the episode in a while. There is another episode named "Reincarnation" in which the episode, as with Anthology of Interest II, is split into three separate parts. The second part is shown in a style reminiscent of 8-bit video games. Both episodes are available for instant streaming on Netflix.
